I have an old Hybrid, that’s about to get a lot more use over the winter, it’s time I replaced the old Chainset. It’s got a Truvativ Power spline B.B. and a SRAM 48 tooth big ring, the spacing is 10 speed, and I generally prefer 170mm cranks. Has anyone got any recommendations for a decent replacement?

You dont normally need to replace the chainset? The bottom bracket wears out and gets clunky and noisey, and the chainrings get knackered and start jumping teeth or sucking in the chain.

You could probably replace the whole thing for less than the price of the chainrings though.

This sounds like a triple crank to me? In terms of compatibility I think it's best to stick with the model it came with.

Here’s the original B.B. As you can probably tell, it had to go, it was properly knackered, it took a bit of ‘persuasion’ to get out laugh. I replaced the chain and cassette whilst I had all the tool chest out anyway. It’s a 10 speed double chain set, and it’s looking a bit ropey. The original part is discontinued now, hence my question. I’m using an 11-36 10 speed Cassette, and it’s a long cage RD.

You could look at fitting a modern outboard bottom bracket (Shimano) and a cyclocross chainset like the Shimano CX50, which is a 10 speed double with 46 large/36 small teeth.

The most durable bottom bracket/chainset combination I have had is a Shimano square taper BB paired with an FSA Vero 50/34 10-speed ST crankset.

No problems, ever, in all weathers, and still going strong after several years. Shifts nicely too.

Your main concern now is matching the new chainset to the front mech and the shifters. You could probably fit any 2 x 10 chainset you like now as long as you buy the correct BB to suit and it'll probably work but these things have a habit of being a PITA if you dont match the chainring sizes, chainline, so in the interest of ease of setup I'd buy the closest thing the original manufacturer makes to what you had.

Difficulty is that 48T big rings are unusual nowadays. May be a good idea to get a new front mech and build a set?

As mentioned above CX50 is a 36/46 combo. Other option is see if you can find a deal on old 4600 Tiagra? The new 4700 is too odd for my liking (different cable pull from all the older 10 speed)

Can you not pull the crank apart, strip all the paint off and polish it to high heaven and put on some nice new rings?

I know I sound like a stuck record but I'm building a snotter bike with an old Shimano FC2350 crank but using a new Claris 2400 FD and old NOS integrated flat bar 8 speed shifters.... and it aint quite right. It works but it's not shifting as smootly as it could and I've loads of front mech noise even with the mech alighned and within its 1-3mm clearance... grrr.

I was thinking that just getting new rings would probably be the easiest way, as I’ve just put the new B.B. in, and it’s splined, not square taper. I’ll have to check, but I think the BCD is a bit unusual on the bolts, and I could do with new, shorter cranks as well. The existing cranks are 172.5mm, I prefer 170 ( or shorter ). I may just have to invest the huge amount of cash, for a UN 55 B.B. and go for a more readily available chainset.
