Red grifter here complete with that yellow siren and the rubber flap of the mudguard tucked on to the tyre to make the motorbike noise (which only lasted a few weeks before the rubber wore through).

Blue Grifter, second hand.

Did myself a mischief riding around sat on the rear mudguard.

It has a slow puncture in the rear, requiring pumping up each week for Sunday School.

(I have since realised that "Sunday School" was probably something my brother and I attended to allow my parents about 40 mins of "private time" each week. Now I have kids of my own, I realise they were not as daft as I thought they were.)

Neither, they were both crap as usable bikes. My first experience of 'form over function', I didn't understand it as a kid in the 70's and I still don't understand it now.
What are all you Chopper fans driving nowadays? Mustangs?

I fell between the two. I got my 'big bike' for Christmas 1976. The Chopper was old hat by then and the Grifter had barely been launched, and was certainly not the popular bike it became a couple of years later.

No complaints though - my Dad, who'd been a keen road racer in his youth, built me a racer - as road bikes were called back then biggrin - himself, and that was my present.

Red Grifter for Christmas, replacing my much loved, battered bright yellow Chipper... Santa played a blinder that year and me trying to seriously hurt myself on that opened the door to BMX and later DH silliness.

Ha! I remember the one and only time we used our bottles in their cages, it was a long ride to the Woolwich Ferry.
Quite a distance from our part of East London, getting near bandit country. hehe

I had a red Grifter and my brother a sliver one. Also remember folding the plastic mud guard protector back on itself so it rubbed on the tyres tread to make motorbike noises.

I’m going to make a guess that mostly, people that voted Chopper are over 53. Those that voted Grifter are mostly under 53.

Just a hunch but would like to know if there’s anything in it....

Was the chopper an earlier bike?

I had a grifter and always thought the chopper looked better. I’m sure I would have preferred one as it looked more like a motorbike. hehe

yes The chopper MK1 came first, it had a circular gearshift lever, adjustable bars and longer seat.
