My cycling club (High Wycombe) are now organising group rides on Zwift, and they work really well. Wednesday is chain gang, fast pace, Saturday is club run, more relaxed. We get 20 to 30 riders each time. The ride organiser can set the ride to ‘Keep TogetherK, so that nobody gets dropped. Half of us use headsets so we can all chat and talk bks as were riding - typical cycling club run chat.

Possibility of setting up Piston Head CC group rides?

First attempt at the Watopia 'hilly route' on the trainer - baseline set - 23 mins and 143 watts average. This could get addictive!

What programme are you using for chat? Zoom or Whatsapp or something or is there a built in chat feature in Zwift?

Most zwift groups use discord, you just need a phone or computer that can run it and a microphone/headphones

Everyone on Zwift seems to be using Discord. Works very well. You can just use your phone or iPad but headphones work much better. I was pleasantly surprised that my Jabra Move BT headphones had a mic built in, but any earphones you use with your phone will do, Basic iPhone earbuds are fine.

For any nerds out there (I know, very unlikely to find any such people on PH, but just in case...).

There's an excellent Facebook group where a few enterprising sorts have figured out the cheapest way to get Zwift running in Ultra graphics specification in 4k resolution. (For reference, Apple TV 4K runs Zwift on the Basic graphics specification).

https://www.facebook.com/photo/?fbid=1015972387435... (you'll probably need to join the group before that link will work).

You'll need to be comfortable with some of the basic elements of putting PCs together (ie be able to unscrew the lid, slot in some more RAM and plug in a graphics card) but it's all fairly basic stuff. Total cost looks like around £250 if you're clever about which parts you buy.

Obviously this won't appeal to everyone - a lot of people are perfectly happy with the basic graphics profile on a tablet or whatever - but personally I spend so much time staring at Zwift that I'd like it to look as pretty as possible... so I'm going to give it a go, I think.

The virtual Tour de France is fun, being able to ride exactly the same routes as the pros. They've tweaked the racing format and are using hilly/mountain routes so the racing is different to the usual Zwift insane start and threshold till the finish races.

I'm looking forward to the new France world and Ventoux.

I'd never done the stage1 route before - I'm def not a climber so tend to avoid the hilly routes; the climb to the radio tower absolutely destroyed me.

Ven-top is going to involve some doping I think.....

Haven't been on Zwift for a couple of months now since the weather picked up - when do we get the New France world? I rode up Ventoux from Malaucene last year and fancy giving the virtual one a go!

I don't think they've announced when (or if) we'll get it. There will be events in the France world the next 2 weekends, with Ventoux in 2 weeks.

Mt. Ventoux?

I’d thoroughly recommend downloading the Road Grand Tours app, or as it is now called “RGT Cycling”.
It is free (and even the ‘premium’ version is free at the moment), and they have Mount Ventoux as one of their rides.

Much more realistic graphics than Zwift, the only downside being it’s a lot quieter.
I was sceptical because I tried ROUVY and didn’t like it, but RGT was a pleasant surprise.

I am looking at RGT after burning through the free stint in Zwift, the graphics are very much PS1 level. Good to hear its quieter. as I don't want any of the social side, I would rather gnaw my own leg off than listen to club ride bantz, been there done that.

The quietness problem is more about the lack of other cyclists to chase/overtake than chat. So it can feel slower riding for miles alone.
Definitely worth a go though. It is free.

Graphics isn’t Zwift’s USP; what people like is the variety of worlds/routes and the many races and group rides at any time of the day or night. I wouldn’t like it any more if the graphics were better and think they are focussing on the right thing by developing existing and new worlds.

I was on a group ride with 4000+ people the other day. No lag, no dropouts, no crashes and my laptop didn't melt.

176 watts Max Average Power (20 mins) on Watopia Mountain 8 route. Small steps! Still only in the 'fair' category!

143 --> 176 isn't a small step, it's a decent jump, nearly 25%! Nice going.

Yes, you can ride the routes but boy are they making it hard to find out how. The swift sites have reams of info on the pro races (I just don’t get how anyone can get excited watching someone else on a turbo) but sites like DC Rainmaker show when we will be able to try the New France courses ourselves. Even on this write-up linked below, you need to scroll a long way down to see when/how you can access the routes
