Two of my daughters go bikepacking and adventure riding and have encouraged me to get out exploring. So, bought this Cannondale Topstone Carbon frame module and will be building it up this weekend.

I’ve got a choice of Shimano GRX800 or SRAM Force, both 1x, not sure which to go for. I do like the SRAM double tap shifters but I’m not convinced about their reliability. Thoughts?

I’ll be heading for the East Devon Way. I might be some time.

Not the best photo, it’s actually very dark metallic purple. Looks great.

A couple of guys in the Gravel Division of our club ride these, very capable, but being BB30 the BB is made from cheese. All good other than that.

It’s even worse than that, it’s BB30A, Ai. (Asymmetric)

Cannonade, in their wisdom made the whole back end offset 6mm, mainly to improve rear wheel strength and give better tyre/chain clearance. Also widened the bb shell from 73mm (BB30A) to 83mm by adding 5mm to each side. Probably improves bearing life but dramatically cuts down chainset options as few have long enough axles. Fortunately I’ve got a spare Hollowgram chainset, which will work (had to buy longer axle). I’ve also had to re-dish a back wheel, which was easy enough.

Sorry yes, BB30A, the same as my Slate…

I can’t seem to capture it properly on the camera but the paint and wheels were really sparkling in the sun this morning.

Yesterday was NBD for me.
I was lucky enough to win the monthly South Coast Suspension Dream Bike Competition at the start of May - super stoked and surprised as I never win anything!!

So after a bit of back and forth looking at off the shelf and custom builds I opted for a custom build Nukeproof Mega with Hope parts and other goodies.
Unfortunately there was an issue with the supply of the frame at the last minute so that went out of the window!!

So my LBS (2WheelsOnly in Tamworth - Nik, Peter and Lee were excellent!!) came to the rescue in the form of a 'unicorn' medium 2022 Nukeproof Mega Carbon 290 Elite.
Quick phonecall/email later I had the cash in my bank from Grant at SCS and hot-footed it down to the LBS.

I give you my very yellow, very awesome Mega 290 Carbon Elite:

Fox bouncy bits:

12 Speed SLX & 4 pots:

Super stoked with it.
Sorted invisiframing the cranks and forks and setting up tubless today.

I built this up last weekend with stuff I already had. Ribble CF frame with Campag Mirage 10 speed groupset and Eurus wheels. Rides really well, I was going to flip it, but after a quick shakedown this morning I was so impressed with how it rides, I’ll now keep it over the summer and use it.

Very nice, I have the 2x on the sport and it’s a nice addition also, most are x1 now on the gravels.

Here’s my new scott addict gravel and bellow is my emonda that's being replaced by it.

Also a pic of my sirius s5. Definitely the best hardtail, probably mtb, I have ever ridden.

I went with GRX mainly because my other bike has Shimano discs, so I already have all the equipment for the brake maintenance (and I prefer shim over SRAM anyway)

Guys what's the deal with these "gravel" bikes? The green & black one above looks amazing but what are they used for? Rough roads or actual off-roading? With no suspension I can't see that they would be very comfortable?!

Anyone got any photos of them in their environment?

Everything.
They can do tarmac, light gravel, full on sand and all the rough stuff. Mainly used for actual gravel or grass/mud really.

Don't need suspension, you just lift your bum off the saddle.

Picture from Rapha Pennine Rally, Edinburgh to Manchester, mostly off road, down the Pennines.

Is it the tyres - and maybe the disc brakes - that make it a gravel bike? If I put chunky tyres on my road bike is it then a gravel bike?
