For my 7 year old son I previously had a 20” wheel Trek Superfly ? which I was pleased with as it was light and reasonably priced.
However, as a retrobike fan, i’ve decided his next bike will be something older.
I found the above Fat Chance in XS on ebay. Just stripped it down and hoping to get any rust dealt with and then re-sprayed into aqua fade like the original Yo Eddy.
I’m thinking of kitting it out with current XT and so that when my son and his younger brother outgrow it, I can just buy a larger frame and move the components across. Hopefully a miniature Fat Chance will be worth something to a like-minded parent.
It also makes me happy to see a decent frame have a new lease of life.
I realise the forks are the wrong way round in the pic - i’d just taken it out of the box and seeing what it looked like assembled before stripping it down to the frame

We've got our 3 year old a 14" carrera from halfords. Read a few reviews of various bikes in that size and the halfords was one of the lightest for the money. Think we paid £130 for it.
We have the same one for our oldest quite possibly. Carrera Star / Cosmos. Weighs 7kg or so and can be had second hand for £50 or so, certainly a lot less than we paid for the equivalent frog bike! You can find quite a few bikes compared here https://popular.reviews/balance-bike/. I did some digging too for my son and Schwinn is the brand that I found most appealing.
We’ve just bought our some a little big bike https://www.littlebigbikes.com/ as a transition between balance bike and pedals. Looks like an interesting concept. If anyone else wants one they do a refer a friend for £15 off.

I bought one of these for my daughters 3rd birthday as she was already moving beyond her Styker balance bike and I wanted something that could grow with her, and have brakes. However... after a few months of the LBB as a balance bike in the smallest configuration she was obviously ready for pedals. Problem was that the minimum inside leg measurement for the LBB in pedal mode is 51cm and she was only 38cm!
So basically the LBB was a waste of money. Unless you are buying it for a child that is already near the size for it in full pedal mode.
A few months after I bought it I went out and got her a Woom 2 (https://www.thelittlebikecompany.co.uk/product/woom-2/) which has been amazing. She is now 4 and has been pedalling since 3 years 4 months.

If anyone is looking for a decent balance bike I can recommend scoot fully extended can take them up to 5 years old for those kids who have no interest in pedalling!
