No one has ever used the words “willy” and “beautiful” in the same sentence to me before, so thank you very much Talking of scenery...
I went to see the Giro a couple of weeks ago. I've been lucky enough to own a little place in Abruzzo for 15 years, the Giro had never been through before. The village threw an EPIC party! My problem was my niece's wedding in York the day before. Left the reception at midnight, drove to Stansted, 80 odd minutes sleep in the back of the car, first flight out at 6.30 and a "spirited" 200km dash in the hire car, easy peasy 😉
I had 3 mates over, so on the Giro rest day we set off to Campo Imperatore.
It's a magical place, I've driven up there but never ridden before. It's a wild open plain surrounded by high peaks all around. We had planned to go to the highest bit you can ride/drive to, but we'd done over a hundred km 2000m of climbing in over 30° heat...and then the thunder storm came, so we legged it to the albergo.
Next day started with 40km descending 😀 but the "plan" was to attempt the Blockhaus after. I always had my doubts about doing the hardest day after a bloody hard day.
The easier route home was still 100km and 1000m.
Took the lads for a cultural detour, this Abbey was built in the year 1007 AD.
My mates flew home on the Wednesday and I still had 3 days to myself. I was gutted not to have made the full climb up Campo so put the bike back in the car and headed back up the mountain.
Another good day, easy to take photos.
About half way up.
One of the reasons I had to go back, this view. The previous time, it had been raining hard and my hands and phone were too wet to work although the rain would have made it invisible anyway.
Not really somewhere you want to be alone if something goes wrong...
Think Clarkson came here in the FF?
You know when you plan a ride and you think the last bit looks tough?!
Mussolini's hotel/prison. Beautiful deco interior but been closed a few years and the outside is losing the battle with the conditions.
Starting the descent, not dressed for it.
Didn't want more climbing at this point.
Going downhill again, TFFT.

It is wonderful country, probably my favourite place in the world. And good at any time of year. I'm happy for the crowds to keep hitting Tuscany and leave the Adriatic half to those of us in the know;)
I have a place in Tuscany we’ll away from Chiantishire and the febs which has great roads and climbs but also not far from the beach if that’s your thing.Keep telling people about the Adriatic side as it will keep my bit peaceful!
