A barely used Reynolds 501 Raleigh, from back in the day. Raleigh used to build their bikes in Nottingham, I bought one from there when I was a kid, and my Dad even rode one back from the factory shop once.

£100 from eBay, with a strip down and new bar tape, chain, modern pedals, tubes and tyres. (I had hoped to go for gum-wall tyres, but it has been a budget restoration.)

Comically large gearing will see it residing with my parents up in Newark, where it’s a lot flatter. A proper run out on Monday night suggested a little tinkering with the rear derailleur is required, but still managed a 2nd place on Strava. Now I know that segment is there, it should be mine next time.

I’m quite pleased with it. Now looking for something in my size with Reynold 531 tubing…

Are you eight feet tall?! Look at the size of the thing! biggrin

I'm a freak. I'm 6'8'' tall.

It is not running on 650's.

Snap, although I got mine new.

No real modifications to it yet, other than a cheap gel seat to replace the evil thing that was fitted. Haven't used it a massive amount so far (we have a new born and a toddler, so time is a premium), but seems like a big advance on my old bike. I like the SRAM 11 speed set up, seems really nice and quick, no need for more gears so far.

At the same time, I got my wife a Carrera Sulcata

No mods to that other than the tassles that I couldn't resist putting on.

Now I just need a few spare hours to tidy up the outhouse they are in.

I think the Carrera mountain bikes have been pushed out of the limelight as no one has reviewed them and instead the Voodoo have got a lot of media attention so people automatically default to them, indeed my local Halfords doesn't even stock the Fury on the shop floor.

Get the toddler onto a bike seat (I have purchased a Weeride), as that will allow you to go out more.

They didn't have it at my local one either, but there was such a good deal running (20% off and then another 10%, so it cost £430ish) that I ordered it in off the website pictures. I don't like the fluoro orange at all, but I like the bike. I had a look at the Voodoo bikes and the deals weren't as good, they were all fluoro colours and on the ones I could afford, the spec seemed more basic than the Fury. All the reviews I could find for the Fury seemed good and a mate of mine is very into MTB (I've been out of it for about 10 years, you can see the remains of my last bike in the pictures I posted), said the spec was good for the price, so ordered the Fury. I used to always think of Carreras as basic (and I guess they are compared to top end stuff), but they have moved on from what they used to be.

When I got the bikes, I bought a trailer a the same time, but haven't taken the bikes anywhere really suitable to use it. I live about 400yds from dunes and hills, that is the only place I've taken the bike so far, but I don't think a trailer would work well there. Looking to go on the Camel Trail soon, so that should be a decent place to try the trailer, although I'm still wondering if a seat would have been better. Might be worth putting the newborn in his car seat in the trailer and letting my wife pull him and I'll get a seat and take the toddler (he's a lump).

Built the Fairlight yesterday as a new commuter/winter trainer. First ride this morning for the 19kms to work and faultlessly buttery smooth, really happy with it.

Picked up my new Carrera Zelos this morning! Really happy with it. Only ridden MTB so it feels weird and sore in unusual places, but its so much quicker and easier. Broke all my segment PB's on strava without even trying smile

My brother saved up and bought the earlier Pro Race (white and bright red) back in the day, which I think had better tubing. That got nicked and so he replaced it with the one like yours. I used to race at that time and when my Bianchi bottom bracket decided to mash itself to bits and I had to find a mail order (remember that!) replacement with an Italian thread, I borrowed his Pro Race for a hilly-ish time trial one evening. My god it visibly flexed and I was only a 10 stone 15 year old!

hehe

It's not going to cover many miles, it will live at my parents' house in Nottinghamshire. The gearing is comically large for what I would need in Devon where I live. I really wanted gum-walls on it, but couldn't find any that were cheap enough.

It definitely flexes, but I still had a couple of brisk rides, and even managed a 2nd place on a Strava segment (which will be targeted next time I visit!)

Now on the look out for something with 531 tubing, in my size.

, my
Trek Emonda SLR8 , had a great ride out on it today , loving the hills .
It looks great. Although coming from an Emonda SL 6 owner, there's probably a bit of bias in there.

But it does need some lovely white bar tape, though...
Not a big fan of white bar tape ! , it came with red which is just wrong . I think I will change stem to black and saddle eventually also . Great bike , thanks for the advice to go for an emonda , I was all set for a really rubbish canyon ?? .
I'm not sure a Canyon would have been rubbish. But I'm a convert to the Emonda now. As I've said elsewhere, the bike pretty much sold itself on the test ride. My SL 6 came with white bar tape and saddle, with a black stem and bars. I really liked the look of the colour combination. The only thing I don't like about it is the decals on the frame are black on red rather than white on red like yours. But that's such a minor complaint to have.

I'd agree with swapping out red bar tape though. I think I've seen it on bikes on the shop floor where I bought mine, and it looks terrible. If you do decide to swap out the stem/spacers, and especially the saddle, keep me in mind for "first dibs"! After 8,600 miles, my saddle is no longer looking at it's best...

Just built this up for a bit of fun, based on On One Pickenflick Ti Cyclocross frame, 105 hydraulic and a few spare parts I had in the bin.

650b wheelset with 2" tyres on it at the moment for general off road rides and 700c wheelset for CX racing also.

cool

If you built that on the same hubs, you'd never need to adjust the brakes or gears when changing wheelsets. Very very cool. Good work.

Thank you, yes, the hubs are the same, no adjustment needed to swap between wheelsets.

Managed to finish the build over the weekend and picked up the bike from the local bike shop after they were helping sort a few things. Frame is a 2009 Cervelo R3 that I picked up from eBay. Really pleased with the results. I need to book in a bike fit, but first ride was great - it weighs in at 7.3kg so flies up hills. Its my first carbon bike.
