The latest 'welfare package' for my MTB has arrived...

CRC order for a Deore FC-M615 38t chain ring, some XT M773 10 speed derailleur wheels, and a 2Nm to 25Nm X-Tools torque wrench. I'm disappointed it took until today to arrive given that the order was placed on Saturday. Even allowing for a Bank Holiday and the 48 hour Royal Mail Tracked (aka: free delivery) option.

Still waiting on Pedal Heaven (local shop) to supply the inner 24t chain ring I've ordered (and paid for) though. I'm gagging for a MTB ride, and have already missed two rides with friends because of this "awaiting spares" situation. Hard to believe spares availability and the poor component descriptions (on websites) for what is a VERY common Deore 2x10 chainset.

It's about time I got hold of the torque wrench though. I've already got a bigger one (30Nm plus) for car stuff, but lack of a suitable smaller torque wrench has put me off relatively simple tasks in the past. For less than £30 it ought to pay for itself in workshop labour rates saved in fairly short order...

Chainring - £22.49
Jockey Wheels - £12.99
Torque Wrench - £27.49

I paid £14.99 for the inner 24t Chainring that has yet to show up, and added to all the other bits and bobs I'll have covered a complete refresh of the entire drive train. New freehub body, cassette, and chain already fitted, but it's unrideable as the new chain won't mesh at all well with the worn chainrings...

Bought a Troy Lee helmet.

Really impressed with the build! £65 from CRC. Bought some POC shorts too, they looked like 3/4 in the picture, too good to be true in hindsight frown

Snap, well I went for the yellow one to replace my ancient Giro.

Really nice quality, great fit and a bargain CRC.

Totally!

Really amazed at the build. Will last me years...or until I replace my black and orange bike laugh

Is it any wonder that people buy their components from the internet instead of ordering from local shops?

Last Saturday I ordered a small (24t) chainring from a shiny local store that sponsored a green Tour Series race team last year.

I paid up front, having been given no choice in the matter, and they took my name, and mobile phone number, and gave me a reference number for the order.

Yesterday, having received all the other parts from CRC (parts that the shop "couldn't find" on their stock ordering system) I phoned the shop to enquire after my order. Not only had they wrongly described the item as a 38t ring, but hey? Surprise surprise, it had arrived. No text, no phone call, though. Why? Well, because it had gone into the "wrong drawer" as a stock item rather than a customer order. After ten minutes on the phone, while the chap in the shop went through the 'goods received' list and then went off to find it, I was finally told that, although the description was wrong, they did indeed have the correct part, and it was ready to collect.

Good job I hadn't planned on doing the repairs and getting out on the bike earlier that day, eh?

...oh, wait...

irked

Next time I'll just order the frigging chainring straight off the internet. If I'm willing to order from abroad I can have it even cheaper too. Seriously, you'd think that bricks'n'mortar shops would try harder with their customer service. It's all they've really got to differentiate themselves from the big online suppliers...

Very cheap. Very cheerful.

Slightly more expensive, but not bank busting.

Really impressed with the Decathlon stuff, I've got their high end shoes and bib, I needed some cheaper tops for commuting and for £5 the quality is spot on. Really impressed by nearly all their range.

To the point I've now got their 900 range shoes and bib, waterproof top and several socks.

Recently I've been wanting some Rapha bits but couldn't justify (spare the) money, was lurking in Evans and spotted the FWE stuff. I won't pretend its as posh as Rapha. However its a similar aesthetic and quality feels very good for £42 all in.

I have a load of BTwin stuff for commuting and its spot on. Not got any of the higher end stuff but looked at some a couple of weeks ago and it looked like quality kit.

I like the material and cut of their cheap jerseys, but the pockets for commuting are just far too small. If they went all the way across the back like normal jersey's I'd use mine but they're relegated to short sunny rides for me now - the basics I need (phone, underwear, wallet, emergency layer) just won't fit in their pockets.

And the cheapest bibs are pretty naff. Fine to start with but once you've had better it's hard to go back to them for anything longer than an hour.

Sadly, had the same issue with my LBS. Ordered a component, took the bike in on a Sat am and they just looked at me puzzled 'oh, we forgot to order It'.

That wasn't the first time they'd messed up, they also charged me to replace a spoke on a handbuilt wheel that they built a few months earlier (it was a £700 wheelset), so I expected a bit of good will and customer service.

Sadly, for them, it's cost them ££££ in lost sales as I've purchased a new bike since from a different store. I'm sure they're not bothered, but it annoys me when I receive poor service, i'd been a loyal customer before that incident and purchased 2 x bikes from them and numerous other bits and pieces.

Snap, well I went for the yellow one to replace my ancient Giro.

Really nice quality, great fit and a bargain CRC.
I quite fancied one of those too - looks great for the money, especially being a TLD helmet.. I hear they are usually very comfortable.

What's the airflow like now you've had chance to hopefully ride in some of this warm weather?

Not ridden in it yet but from adjusting it all up its super comfy.

Airflow will be better than my 13 year old Giro as the TLD has plenty of decent sized vents.

Why do MTB helmets have peaks, road ones don't?

I use my MTB helmet on my road bike, but apart from looking odd (does it?) what am I missing?

Not sure but its good at keeping branches etc out of your face when blasting about off road.
