Santa Pod events

I went yesterday too. I've been to the pod many times (for yank shows), but this is the first time I've seen Top Fuel. Wow, it was brilliant, great to see the place so packed too.

Never seen it so busy. The crowds were massive, had to camp miles away on the pit side. Weather was great, hardly any incidents so racing all day up to 9pm. Friday was amazing and finished off with a spectacular fireworks display just as the rocket bike passed the finishing line.

No idea why that posted twice .
My neighbour, who is a Ford mechanic,came to me for the Saturday with his son and he is now hooked !! Absolutely amazed and wants to know when we can go again. He said no matter how many videos you watch, being there and feeling the ground shake is on a different level.

The trouble is, when I go from now on to the 'normal' events, I'll see a car run 8 or 9 seconds and think, meh, bit slow that.

If the weather's decent next weekend I'll take my Firebird down to the Hot Rod Drags, the forecast's looking a bit crap atm though unfortunately.

I went too. We arrived on Thursday afternoon and the general camping area (the one beyond the finish line on the pit side, near the wind turbines) was already pretty full but we were able to drive round and get a decent spot - they initially sent us further, to some harder ground, due to the size of the motorhome and the possibility of getting stuck etc.

I've been to events before where the Top Fuel competitors had trouble with consistency but this event, they all got their **** together by the end of qualifying and I've never seen them so close (all 3 within 2/100 sec). I spoke with Susanne Callin after and she didn't really know where it came from! But was just happy to get the top spot. (In her previous run the car had the performance but the electronics shut it off early, resulting in a 4.0 sec pass). And of course, she went on to win the event and this year's championship.

Lovely shot. And it epitomises drag racing's lack of the absurd levels of self importance and corporate bullst which often taints even relatively minor modern race series .
