Ah nice, you have some good roads to take it on then!

I spent a weekend thrashing my CL7 around the Brecon Beacons a few months back. Great fun.

Do you know Lex and Ryan (both owned DC5's up until a couple of months ago) who are down your way?
Sorry for the late reply.
I don't recall the names but may know of them on the dc5 forum.
Feel free to mail me if you're visiting South Wales again, a CL7 and FD2 photo would be nice.

Sure will do mate!

Not sure if it's any use, but a bunch of us are doing a quick run up to Cheddar Gorge on Sunday. Will be there about 7-8 for a couple of hours I imagine.

If it's not too far from you then come say hello!

I went through a similar process earlier this year when I was contemplating the huge price differences between a freshly imported FD2 and a lovely red FK8...

It didn’t help that my inner 3-year old wanted the FK, but my heart wanted the FD as I had been drawn to them in my early 20’s but could never afford one.

I’ll let the pictures show how it ended smile

It still puts a massive smile on my face. It continuously surprises me by its versatility and performance, so much so that I often find myself doing 15 mile detours on the way home from the station!

That and there are only 4 black FD2’s in the country, which make it pretty rare

Looks stunning, Black is a pain to live with but I’d do it for that car!

I would love to own an FD2 but being under 25y old it makes it super difficult to insure is one reason and the other is that I having to get parts scared me a little because lots of people having to speak to honda japan to find parts.

Honda Japan is not as big and scary as it seems. Plenty of people in the UK do weekly orders and I can get pretty much any part within 7 days and normally 2/3's of the price.

The initially cost of buying an FD2 is getting a little silly at the moment though. Currently driving a CL7 Euro R, which already features the K20A, LSD, 6 speed manual etc – the thought of paying twice the price for a car that contains a lot of the same kit (albeit more refined) put's me off a little.

(I'm not comparing a CL7 to an FD2, I'm more than aware that the FD is the better car, just not sure it's twice the car.)

Agree with Kewy - there's a few places and people now which make it (nearly) straightforward to get parts from Japan.

The only big deal would be if you had a significant accident and had to wait for replacement parts to come over...but that could equally be true for an old ITR or ATR (for example), where the parts are back-order only.

...and you're probably right. As an owner (of possibly the leggiest FD2 in the country, on 103k and counting), I'm not complaining about the inflation but there's definitely a law of diminishing returns for the 'halo' cars (whether it's DC2 / FD2 in the Honda world, or E30 M3 in the BMW world, or 205GTi in the Peugeot scene, etc. etc...)

They hardly ever need new parts either.

In 3 years, our one has needed a battery.... that's it.

In regards to OP, They're both Honda Civic Type R's but both rather different propositions.

I would drive both and see what you think is probably the best advice I could give.

Usual cliche of the old one is more raw in feel, lighter, possibly more fun on a b-road etc... New one is very fast and effective with maybe a more insulated driving experience in-comparison. The FD2's are stiff on our the roads, But a weekend toy has to have some compromises to make it worthy of a weekend toy, IMO.

Thanks, Keo

Crystal Black Pearl was introduced in the facelift and replaced the Vivid Blue Pearl. It’s an absolute pig to keep clean, but that’s to be expected.

There are currently 4 black FD’s in the UK, so rather rare too smile

Only kidding, enjoy your new car mate. Never been in one but heard very good things about them.
