9-10K for a good low mileage one is about right. They're increasing in value along with DC2s and DC5s.

Rusted suspension components will be a risk on any UKDM japanese car that is over 5 years old, just make sure you have a good look underneath any prospective purchases.

If it's red budget in for a full respray at the most, or a pretty serious protection detail at the least.

Milano red is notorious for turning pink and fading....ask me how I know.

Brake lines is a cheap MOT fix that any garage can do in the event of them failing MOT, usually about £50 a side...general wear and tear item on any car that age.

Indeed but will it be indicative of more serious rust across the car? It's close to me so I can go check it out. Others are further away so would probably require me to put my hand in my pocket for a PPI before I was able to travel to see the car.

The orange car looks a good bet, one owner, fsh, low mileage, but is 8.5k steep money for it? Much higher than the trade price.

Not necessarily no.

Nah like i said, decent ones are fetching £8k plus easy now, they bottomed out a while ago so prices are going back up.

this may help-

Hmm. The orange one looks to have some pretty serious corrosion to the alloys. Offputting at 8.5k.

Also worth budgeting in to get the underside of the car undersealed again for peace of mind...probably only £100-200.

Need to get the DC5 done before winter rolls in.

Alloy refurb should only set you back £200 or so, so I wouldn't necessarily let that put you off the right car.

Yes I was thinking that if I bought a slightly cheaper one I could use the spare change for a few things: service including fluids change and geometry set up, getting the car under sealed, and perhaps an air filter.

Perhaps an after-market radio of some description also!

Budget in for all that regardless of how much you spend on the initial purchase.

I had to spend a good couple of grand on my DC5 when I bought it just on servicing and a couple of little niggles...part and parcel of buying an older high performance car I'm afraid.

Decent tyres will also set you back £100+ a corner, but are a must on a car like the s2k.

Indeed. The red one is peaking my interest - nearby, just passed it's MOT this week with only two advisories, for the rear tyres, which the seller states he has replaced. Seven grand is good money, and it comes with the hardtop. Probably worth checking out.

cool, just make sure the paint is decent, you don't want to be shelling out £3-4k on a respray in a years time.

If there is no obvious signs of paint deterioration, do you think that it will be fine? Or is it inevitable.

It would be pink...but if it's been recently machine polished by the seller you have no real way of knowing, unless it has had a full respray in the last few years and has reciepts backing this.

My milano red DC5 looked stunning when i bought it, but by the summer the protection that the seller used had worn off and the paint is a total state now, respray is the only thing that will rescue it.

The trouble with red, is that it fades under the lacquer so once it starts to go there isn't a whole lot you can do about it.

The owner prev to me had a respray in single stage...the plus to this being that you can machine polish the paint back to lustrous red when it fades, the negative been it watermarks like crazy, and i've run out of paint thickness to have polished.

just a word of caution...personally I wouldn't buy a red car again. It's an extra £3k i really didn't want to have to spend.

Hmm. Okay. It might be worth checking out anyway given it is nearby. Will also keep an eye out for decent DC5's, but there doesn't seem to be too many going about in budget.

Further research into DC5s and S2Ks is giving me the real fear re. rust, and spending the best part of ten grand on a car that does rust, given I'll be storing it outside during a Scottish winter.

Also, apparently maintenance and service parts can get expensive.

Is this undue concern ?

Well yeah, in as much as it is on any car 10 years old...just don't buy a rusty one, and keep on top of cleaning.

The s2k and dc5 aren't known for any terrible design flaws re. Rust...some dc5s go on the rear arches but that's easily avoidable when shopping for one. Mine has a tiny rust bubble on the rear edge of one rear arch, and a tiny bit of surface rust around the boot lid handle, and that's a car that's been in the UK 11 years...my mx5 the same age was in far worse shape rust wise, and we are talking a good 5 years ago.

They're nowhere near as bad as mx5s or older Nissan I'll tell you that much.

As far as servicing and parts, it's a honda, so it's not as cheap as Mazda or Mitsubishi, but it isn't VAG prices.

You do realise that running a performance driven older Japanese car is going to require a bit of tlc and preventative maintenance right? It's not quite the same as running a more or less brand new shopping spec hatchback.

The 75k major service on a dc5 is about £550...got mine coming up in Feb, probably need a couple other bits doing so I'm expecting around £700. Typical annual 12k service is about £200. Not a great deal really.

Yah ofc. It's not really regular running costs that concern me, it is being hit with a bill for two grand to have seized suspension bolts cut out and replaced, or three grand to have rear sills rebuilt. I think takinf time to find a good one is the name of the game.

And my concern is am I confident enough to buy a good one !
