Hi all - We are planing a Driving Holiday to Auschwitz in May/June and plan to include driving through Switzerland & Austria on the outward leg. (Returning via Germany/Holland) One of our overnight stops will be just outside Geneva at Bourg-En-Bresse and then plan to drive right through to Brno in Czech Republic and on to Auschwitz.

Any suggestions on which basic route to take? We want the best driving route, not most efficient!!! We will be avoiding Motorways and happy to take detours to drive some passes. Also, places to stay. On a budget so bringing tents along and happy with F1/Ibis Budget type places.

Thanks for any advice

Paul

Late May could be too early for some of the higher Swiss/Austrian passes to be open.

There are so many its impossible to list a route, I have them marked on a map, choose my start and finish point and fit in as many as I can. You'll struggle to find routes that don't have awesome views!

Don't forget that progress over the passes can be painfully slow, especially in a car.

The TCS campsite at Disentis is a nice one, especially if you've got children (there is a lake with a big water playground). It's at the bottom of Oberalp Pass, just outside the town & has an OK restaurant on site.

As noted, the passes are often still closed until mid June so you might be out of luck (apart from the few that are kept open all year). The following website will give you up to date information:
