Around the time of my planned trip to the Spa F1 Grand Prix next year (2018) I'm also thinking about visiting the Nurburgring and wondered if anyone has any hints, tips, and or advice on where to stay etc. I'm currently thinking of B&B/Hotel/Apartments etc opposed to camping but would welcome any guidance

2 posts in 13 years! Top lurking!

Basically (as anywhere) it depends on budget, there are nice places everywhere, there are cheap places everywhere, to know the sort of place/price that you are looking for may help people give more appropriate advice.

I personally have cover the full spectrum there.

Top hotel (at the time) overlooking the start/finish straight, local B & B, local apartment, local hotel etc.

lurk lurk LOL

Its for me and the wife with two kids, 7 & 3 so I'm looking for a double room and a twin room as a minimum. Holiday Inn type standard would be sufficient, no need for much more as we'll hopefully be spending most of our time track side.

Half way to everywhere, and all walkable. Lovely, well run, professional family hotel for the past 30 years, seen everything, had everyone (derek bell arrived as we were celebrating out first day's survival). Nice.

We were lucky last year and got some decent prices at the Dorint.

Usually we stay at a place in Kaltenborn. It's a bit further away from the track so it gives the cars a nice warm-up run in the mornings and our 'evening fun' does not upset too many other guests.

This time we had family/girlfriends/wives with us, so they didn't want to stay in a remote hotel with limited 'female-friendly facilities'.

We normally pay about £50/night, but the Dorint was offering a double-double for £90/night (for 2 adults & 1 child).

Quite liked it actually, and I'd stay again if I could get a slightly cheaper price for a single or single-double.

Looking to do a Spa/Nurburg trip next year as well, so i'll be keen on alot of this info as well.

Are track days at Spa on the F1 track all year round or only specific times?
Does Anyone have and advised time to go?

Been going for 18 years (actually got back from there yesterday). 15 mins from the track, 15 mins from Cochem.

Perfect for your kids too, the garden is wonderful.

The Hilberath Villa is a great place to stay for a family in Adenau, I have stayed at least half a dozen times.

However, the proprietors can be rather awkward to deal with, so I have stopped staying there now, but if you can handle them it is very comfortable and perfectly located.

I've recently returned from my first ring trip, for some decent priced comfy accommodation id recommend Gästehaus Fuchsröhre where i stayed, place is plenty comfortable enough, has its own parking and well located for a ring trip (1 straight road to the gp circuit-5 minute drive) person who own/runs it is very nice and welcoming, also speaks fluent English. breakfasts were nice and theres a bar in the hotel which i believe does food but i didn't try it out myself.

Always stay here now a days. Good for the family. Not as cheap as it used to be. Get some shopping from the supermarket in Adenau and a crate of beers from there too. It's kid friendly with a few slides an swings. A few mins drive as well. Perfect self catering for a young family.

4k for a week in September !!!

It's not even the week I'm after i.e. spa week. God knows how much that week/weekend will be.

Thanks for the idea though

When your booking you only need to book 1 room, as that's the whole house!
Unless thats what you have done and that weeks there's a millionaires convention on at the ring!!
I know it's expensive in August, but normally reasonable the rest of the year, availability during major events is normally the issue.

Excuse the slight digression but do they ever do novice days / sessions at the ring? I'm looking to go for the first time (as a driver) next year also, but am mindful of getting in the way, hence my question.

Nope.

The closest thing that there is to novice time would be to aim for an evening midweek public session at an unfashionable time of year. Track days are not especially novice friendly there as you will usually have racing cars on slicks there all the way up to one or two of full fat SP9 VLN GT3 cars as well as the usual heavily modified track toys that aren't an enormous amount slower.

[Note - there are a few expensive training course events such as offered by BMW M (using the latest M2 and M4), but the nature of the question leads me to suspect that you may not be looking for something where you have to get on a waiting list and pay an "if you have to ask then you may well not be able to afford it" cost?]

A large part of being quick (or at least reasonable) at the 'ring is simply knowing what comes next. If you are a competent circuit driver I'd suggest getting one of the numerous driving games and do 100 laps until you know the sequence of bends (just don't try to replicate your speeds on the real thing).

If you don't have any track experience I'd avoid it until you've done a pile of track days elsewhere.

Thanks guys.

I've probably done 12 or more track-days, so not a total novice, but my old E30 probably isn't as quick as a lot of more modern stuff. I'm just mindful of not getting in the way. I have Project Cars on my PS4 though, so will see if I can at least get some idea of corner sequence. I'm also looking to try and go with someone I can follow for a few laps to up my confidence. Anyway, thanks again chaps. Mark smile

Quite a few of the trackdays there by the continental organisers (if ATDO isn't required for your insurance on track) are road legal cars (ie no slicks) only so might be worth a try. The training course events are quite expensive but they are 2-3 days and you have a lot of track time tbh. The way Scuderia S7 or Hanseat break up the course into sectionals I found very useful personally and it's quite interesting driving backwards at the ring!

Outside of that. the suggestion above of midweek TF evenings is a very good one as well. Outside of the mad weekends, just driving sensibly at the TF weekdays and treating it as a one way country road until you can remember the corners probably is the best option at a sensible cost.

Stayed here for a night on my way back from Venice (Funball Rally) just outside of Adenau, could hear all the cars at the 'ring as I was checking in. Quiet, comfortable, reasonable price for mid July, but booked up for when I go again next July.

As for the ring itself,i did dozens of laps on Forza before i went to learn the direction and what to expect (as well as the many hundreds of laps over the years) but nothing prepares you for that first time. Keep your wits about you, keep an eye on your mirrors and keep right are the best bits of advice i can give, its addictive as well. And don't be worried about your speed, i overtook fiesta st's, a merc A class and a Toyota Aygo, there's all sorts that show up., i did it in a Panda...
