I guess I'm holding out for the input of a unicorn who has driven both E46 with SMG and TT with DSG, both having the updated software. I'm probably not going to get this opportunity, so I'm sort of jumping in at the deep end...
Yeah it's probably a tough ask as they cover different demographics generally. I think the TT gearbox would be a better car for daily use, the M3 gearbox far better on track.
I have driven the SMG on standard software, and actually found it a bit of a pain in London traffic - it felt jerky, and like it would almost be better to use manual shifting. Given that its absolute primary use is going to be for doing 6k road miles a year, I feel like I'm answering my own question a bit...

I'd go for a Scirocco over the TT, personally. I think they look great, drive great and would be good for what you're after. They're lower and wider than a Golf too. They definitely need to be lowered as standard though, as the ride height is comical. I went for some H&R 35mm lowering springs all round. You should be able to get a decent 2.0 TSI with the DSG for your budget.

I'd also recommend the MK4 Renault Sport Clio 200T, as someone already did a few pages back. Really underrated cars and have a fantastic chassis. I think they'd be ultimately more fun than a VAG car and can be easily and safely mapped to 250bhp by RS Tuning in Leeds. They can be had for around 10/11k. I'd recommend a test drive of one of those to see if it's for you.
