Seems the local MP has persuaded the top bod at Lyneham to can all trackdays at the circuit to appease the concerned locals. Another venue crossed off the list.

I hope the Government bean counters over-ride that decision.

It’s unlikey that Defence Estates will receive the funds for MSE’s occasionsal use of the site. It’s only once businesses are signed up as tenants or high frequency users that they become involved.

More likely is income for such use goes into the base welfare fund to treat the guys & girls to some new gym equipment or other recreational stuff. Which makes it even worse!

Got a link/source? They're still being advertised on Motorsport Events.

See just below in the ‘Lyneham trackdays stopped?’ thread.

I used to do the annual charity track days at RAF Marham in Norfolk.

Brilliantly well organised, fun track, BUT the car suffered the most appalling grit rash, hundreds of stone chips all over the front paintwork, and a ruined windscreen.

Just saying - can we perhaps have some opinions please on the state of the airfields mentioned? To be fair, I did the last ever track day at Hullavington and didn't notice excessive grit. I was very grateful for the open spaces too, after losing the brakes completely at 120mph.

I know it's not an airfield (well, hasn't been for a long time), but Snetterton in Norfolk is an MSV race circuit, easy to get to from the Metrollops, M11, A11, is fun to drive, smoother and more stone free than any public road, and there are huge run-offs in most places. You would have to be very unlucky to hit anything there on a dry day. I even managed a 3.5 revolutions spin there in the wet without hitting anything. yikes

As have I with no trouble, but Lyneham has been said to be still a bit stony. Not that it will matter if it's closed again. frown

No worries about stones at Abingdon, nor was there any issues with them at Hullavington or even Keevil and Collerne back in the day as they all have/had a well sealed surface.

Part of the area used at Lyneham has been surface dressed with very small stones and it is these that seems to break away with the weather and traffic. They’re about half way between typical road surface gravel sized bits and a grain of sand. Whereas gravel pings and rattles around in the wheel arch these sounded more like a coarse powder being thrown up, probably quite effective at scouring away paint... In the briefing MSE mentioned they’d had bits of Lyneham swept beforehand to reduce the issue. I never really noticed it driving there last November on the circuit area in an open car with no windscreen, but then again it was somewhat damp. There was lots in the parking/pit area still and I cleared quite a lot of muck out the car afterwards.
