Is it worth going the ring in a boring car? I have got an Audi A3 diesel, such a boring car but hard to justify changing it. (I don’t fancy driving over there in my Elise)
Is it worth going init? I would love to go just to expirence the ring as I have never been. But worried it would be a let down in such a st car.

I would definitely do a lap init just to say I have been around the ring. But would probably be a mobile chicane in the numb, understeery a3

So why not bring the Elise then? Chances are you eill be a mobile chicane whatever you visit in for the first time, so might aswell be a car you enjoy!
We used to visit in our Elise 5 or 6 times a year for 5 years.

If your going on a public day then yes it’s fine we overtook a Corsa hire car and a tourist coach! Unbelievable so an A3 isn’t going to be standing out too much.

I would prefer a little comfort/ ease of driving for that distance. I have really fallen out of love with my Elise and want to sell it when I get back from holiday

Good compromise would be to drive the Audi across and rent a car (from R4R, Apex etc.) for some laps - then you'll be insured properly.

That. Do that. It's the best and least risky plan.

^^ Yep this. Seen lots of normal cars drive around the ring, but be careful as so many seriously faster cars around. I drove up in my 330i and hired out a Lotus Elise Sport for 3 laps, it was setup with race suspension and brakes so better suited. Brilliant fun as it didn't have a high enough top speed to get into too much trouble but brilliant on the twisty bits.

^^ Another yes to this. I've been going to the Ring at least once or twice a year for over 10 years and in some pretty crazy things but can honestly say perhaps the most fun I've had in all this time was in a track prepared Suzuki Swift. Don't turn your nose up at it (if you do) - it's properly prepared (racing bucket and harnesses etc.) and will be easily quick enough for you on your first visit but not fast enough to scare the s*** out of you! See link below.

http://www.rent4ring.de/en/rentals-for-the-nordsch...

Also, look at the dates for the tourist drives on the website (see below) and try and pick a date(s) than won't be super busy, i.e. try to avoid German public holidays and definitely avoid German car Friday (March 30).

http://www.nuerburgring.de/en/fans-info/info/openi...

Tourist Days have become a bit "Wacky Racers" overs the last couple of years (that's why I only do private club sessions now) - so, just be careful and keep looking up ahead for any accidents and in your mirrors. Above all, go at your own pace and enjoy it! It took me 50 laps to get to know where the circuit goes so don't expect to set a new lap record on lap one! You'll never forget it smile

Thanks for all that info. The swift looks great fun. Would definitely like to go around in a swift/ clio type car.

Last time I was there it was en route elsewhere and I had no plans to do any laps, more so in a fully laden 20 year old automatic Volvo estate however we were there, it was quiet and the wife has never been on a track before so I figured a sedate run round would be fine... however it was also about 3deg and raining and it was at that point that I realised that said old Volvo on all season tyres was actually holding its own and in turn, it morphed in to one of the best laps I've had, which is as impressive as it is tragic!

Well, I'm going for Karfreitag again...and once again the Z4MC is staying at home (still waiting for new brakes & seats to be fitted) and I'll be doing my 40 laps in my 15 year old, 165,000 mile, 115bhp Alfa JTD - on all-season tyres.

It's going to be another weekend of immense fun - and whatever the weather, it won't be an issue!

I did exactly this, and went with Apex too. Fantastic experience all round, and didn't actually work out too expensive.

Nice insurance excess!! eek

Probably the most sensible way of doing it though if you're travelling in a daily driver.

Karfreitag is good if you want to party and all but it can be a pain in the ass to get around Nurburg with so much people around!!

And the track can be really dangerous with lots and lots of not so experienced drivers!

I really dont see how someone can have fun during this day but whatever floats your boat biggrin

Cheers,
Kostas.

Quite fun spectating though!

We tend to do 5 or so laps first thing in the morning, then go out for a tour of the region, then back for the evening session. We do that over 4 days so we get our average 25-40 laps in, 3 times a year.

Probably the same sort of perverse fun that someone gets from throwing themselves out of a perfectly functioning aircraft, with a handkerchief in their back pocket.

Do it. Visited the ring for a friends stag do last summer. We went in fancy dress (as old men), which included our cars, we all bought 1.3 Nissan Micras and probably had more fun than when I took my E30.

And yes, my friends are much better drivers than me wink
