worth noting that car and motorbike helmets have different standards because they are designed for different types of crashes - broadly, motorbike helmets are more towards one big hit and lots of sliding, car helmets multiple hits from car/road/rollcage. they also have different neck clearance and vision openings.
I'm intrigued. I'd love to do some reading on this if you have any articles you'd like to share.

Definitely, my Hans full face race helmet is very tough around the front and has a narrower visor opening compared to my first trackday bike helmet which is positively flimsy in comparison

Just to conclude, Halfords value range helmet (black, size L and £35) was fine and much less restrictive than I anticipated and there were no concerns over it from the organisers. I'd definitely recommend it as a cheap / spare and to be honest, it'll probably do me a while as it's very comfy to wear. Thankfully I can't comment on how it fares in a crash and hopefully that remains the case.
