How was the circuit days double? Conditions looked perfect wished I was there!
Two fantastic days. Day one was the quietest of the two. For most of the day you would have sworn that you were on a high end trackday as the track was so quiet. Most people seemed content just being here rather than driving.

Do tell. Not seen anything on the groups I’m on.

Heard it second hand but lots of red flags and someone dropped fluids causing another crash which lead to a v long stoppage... DN days have always been pretty good re driving standards but didn't seem to be the case yday.

There was a few reds but not overly long. In fact one closure opened earlier than expected.
Yes a few cars did not come out of the day well. Thankfully all drivers were ok.
In general though the weather was perfect and it was a good day with very little traffic on the track at most times.

Actually driving standards were great. The fast guys were decent enough not to bully people out of the way and the slow guys (except one) were always mindful of faster traffic coming up behind.

The dropped fluid was rather unfortunate. It happens to a few older kettle 911 GT models. There wasn't much the owner could do. As for the other crashes - it's a race track, people push their cars and sometimes they do come a cropper. Happens in racing all the time too. Overall a decent day - would it have been better with no red flags - of course, but overall, still feel my friends and I had a lot of fun.

Agree. The majority of stoppages were bad luck; mechanicals. There but for the grace of the big Spaghetti monster in the sky…

Everyone lived to fight another day, which is the main thing.

Was the issue coolant lines on a GT3/Turbo? These days drivers really need to have those fixed preventatively.

Yes, and 110% yes.

It’s a very well known hazard and should be pre-empted.

Considering the owner and the (well respected) garage the car was taken to don’t know what the issue was, how do you deduce that?

Not knowing any of the finite details it has to be remembered that a coolant system can fail on even the most meticulously prepared vehicle. It’s not always a case of neglect or poor maintenance scheduling.
Sadly it happens.

I make no comment about the specific vehicle. Me and a few others spoke his mate in the pits, who was following him at the time in an Exige and he showed us the coolant over the front of his car. I'm just glad all were okay, because that can be a very tricky situation.

My point is, if a garage is looking after a 996/7 GT3 or RS (to be used on track) then they ought to be aware of and discuss the issue with the owner.

Without derailing the thread, full info here: https://www.sharkwerks.com/tech-articles/the-gt1-c...

IMHO it actually ought to have been tackled by an OEM recall/modification, but that's another matter entirely.

I’m aware of that particular issue, there is some anecdotal evidence it affects hotter climates more than Europe although it’s not unknown here-I followed one at Spa when it happened eek

When it’s the joints you mention it does tend to be a catastrophic loss of coolant, not what happened this week (where the car in question had lost less than half a litre of fluid before it was noticed and pulled over).

The garage in question don’t think it’s that problem although further exploration is needed.

Main thing is everyone is ok.

Sports & Classic advise pinning (like Sharkwerks in USA) and Fearnsport advise welding, which also works. Some though, do neither.

As you say, important bit is everyone is okay. thumbup Was a very nasty one a few years back, initiated by a GT3 losing coolant.

FWIW I did not think the red flags necessarily indicative of poor driving standards, but rather, mostly just bad luck. It happens.

Good to hear no one was injured and also that it was more bad luck than poor driving standards that caused the red flags. I always have my car inspected by McLaren before my annual ring trip just to make sure all is in order, they then recommend any work they think needs doing whether it be consumables or warranty related. Even at that it's probably not a silver bullet but it does give me some peace of mind that the car is in good working order.

Didn't some early McLaren's have issues with Oteker clamps popping off causing coolant being dumped on track?

Correct. I think some cost accountant at McLaren saved less than £100 per car, between the rubbish ones they used and the best that could have been fitted.

My mate had all his changed on his 650S, with labour, the cost to remedy the issue was far more than ten times the value engineered saving.

And people still take the piss out of TVRs for being unreliable. biggrin

I hired a car for the first time on Monday, I'd throughly recommend it. Great fun hooning in someone else's car with zero f's given. RingFreaks were a good outfit.

I think there's a few others in this topic who are going as well. I know a few other M3 guys who are heading over, should be an amazing day.
