eh? You lost me there. Who is the 3rd party if "you" have you car nicked, you've hardly crashed into anyone to create the 3rd party? The "insured" I was referring to was the fact that you have to have 3rd party cover to drive on the ring due to it being a Toll Road. The fact that the insurance company cannot get out of the 3rd party bit means that at least you won't be breaking German driving law.

The mecahnical thing scares me. There have been indeicents of GT3 dropping coolant, and bikers being hurt. Got a quote from Manning this week for annual cover including trackdays as standard.
They cover nurburgring but not on TF days.
In fact their track cover is only for days organised through PCGB or comapnies with ATDO or (i forgot the other one FEMA?) membership.
Fairly competitive quote considering the track cover.

Agreed, £8k excess vs £unlimited? Definitely makes it an easier pill to swallow if something goes wrong though it's plenty hanging over you to remind you to treat the place with the respect that it deserves.Having said that though taking your own car round has something about it.

Yes,I totally agree having taken the risk myself quite a few years ago when laps were only 10Euro. However,the risk is somewhat reduced if you know where the real hazards are on the circuit. Half a day in a rented car with an instructor can work out a hell of a lot cheaper in the long run,and believe me,a huge amount of fun.Having said that though taking your own car round has something about it.
After Le Mans Classic I am headed for the Nurburgring. The original intention was to take the Aston round---not covered--just 3rd Party Liability (millions though)so thought of RSR , good deal but you still have a 6000euro excess on a Clio (more on the better cars) plus you are liable for third party damage. I enquired about excess cover which can be available at 400+ euros (if you qualify).
I'm afraid 500 euros for a lap is out of my league, so I will be watching unless anybody knows if the 'Taxis' are still available.
Four years ago I took the Aston round on an excess of £3000 which I could live with, things have certainly changed!

I did the ring in my own car on a TF day before realising the full insurance implications.
If I go again I'd hire a ring car

on a track day you have no insurance but neither does anyone else so your limited(1) to armco damage, your own car damage. You won't get stung for closing the track either (a lot of cash on a Saturday afternoon on a TF day in the summer)
REIS insurance do track day cover on everywhere BUT the ring. If they find out you've been on the ring on a TF day they will cancel your cover even if there was no claim!!

"They" have actually never done a trackday at the nurburgring. They simply sell tickets for trackdays.de. Go direct and its much cheaper (saving around £60 for the next date). One thing to be wary of with foreign trackdays is that they sometimes, but not always, require third party trackday insurance; available in Germany but not here.Quite right,far better to go to RSR or someone similar as the cars are ready to go,fully insured [even covering armco!] All you need other than that is to pay for the petrol. RSR are a VERY experienced company employing Very experienced staff,all in all,it doesn't get any better for enjoying half/full day on the Ring!

Surely though with a large number of incidents by now a precedent would have been set where a British driver's costs have been met and cover has been affected. I cannot believe that no-one has taken it all the way to the European courts. Either all insurers are bound or they are not.
