I think the synopsis of these numerous pages is:
  • Your normal policy may exclude the Ring (TF or otherwise) explicitly by name. If it doesn't, call them up and check.
  • There are a few specialist policies which will insure damage to your car (1st party cover) on TF or trackdays, and they are listed.
  • A few of these policies will also cover damage to armco specifically, with a limitation on value.
  • No policy exists (for TF or otherwise) to cover against 3rd party damage.
Is that fair?

Things they dont cover......

9. Track days and off road events
 Any liability, loss or damage caused by the use of your car at any event where your car may be driven:
• in a race - whether formally or informally
• on a motor racing track
• on a de-restricted toll-road
• at an off road event
• whilst green laning
• on an airfield; or
• on the Nürburgring.
 Also when using your car for racing, rallies, pace making, motor sport, hill climbing, speed trials,

Do we really need to make a list of providers who don't cover the ring?

Given that it's very easy to look at one's own documentation...

Yes, spot on. If one wants to be pedantic, one could add that if your "otherwise" refers to track days, those do not have car to car 3rd party liability to cover...but armco damage of course is still there.

Fair.

Can we just sticky this and stop people from adding another 13pgs of "my policy says X"?

Okay, i'm confused. Given all the risk with TouristFahren, why would you not just do a track day (which i presume is easy to get insurance)?

To save £700??

The question is what do you want to do at the Nurburgring. (This may sound silly)

TouristfFahren (Tourist drives) is the opportunity to drive around the ring and enjoy it, Track days are for going fast and enjoying it. Sadly TF has lost this and people want to pay the 25 / 30€ to go as fast as they can without a care and aim to break records.

I have always done TF but I have also started to do track days at the ring and they are totally different. TF I take it easy watching and enjoying everything, Track days have been wet so been on my own on the ring as its ace in the wet.

+1. Exactly my issue with the ring. A TF should be a chance to drive a derestricted country road without any pedestrians or anyone coming the other way and an element of 'big boy games big boys rules'. Not a track day.

Not on a bike it's not!!

I've done hundreds of bike laps of the Ring (albeit I stopped shortly after all the idiots started chasing the Clarkson time and ruined it) and I've only ever done one wet lap, which was about 22.7999999km too long for my liking! It was literally like riding on marbles, the bike was borderline uncontrollable. Got it back in one piece and vowed never again!

I usually have clearer laps mid week on a TF day vs the average track day.

Few years ago I wrecked a car on the ring which my UK insurance paid the damage in full. I claimed it was a TF day therefore classified as a normal German road.
Since then there was a clause added to specifically excluded the Nurburgring.

I know a few people (Germans) who were involved in accidents at the Ring.

They successfully claimed on the insurance of the responsible party. It was treated as a normal road accident.
Most German policies treat the Ring as a public road, so do not refuse to pay out on 1st/3rd party claims.

This is a specific issue with UK, and possibly other non-German, policies.

Despite other people saying otherwise, e.g. C70R inferring he is fully insured as a UK driver in a UK car at the Ring, then posts a link to a PH post of his with lots of caveats, then goes on to say that 3rd party cover is impossible and he'd only talking about 1st party and barrier damage...so not FULLY insured.

I wish C70R would make up his mind!

Don't be antagonistic. We're all friends here.

In the other thread I said "my car was fully covered" - quoting things out of context doesn't create harmonious discussion.

I said I could get practically the same cover on a TF day as I can get on a UK trackday, which is also true.

It's all in this thread.

Insuremytrackday covered me first-party and up to a few grand of armco damage for a TF day. That's more cover than I get from Greenlight on my UK trackday insurance.

Apologies, I missed it in the vast volume of bickering.

Does that cover you for smashing the car up? To what value?

What did the policy cost?

Just dug into my emails, and this is what I found. For £200 in August last year, I got:
- Car value of £4k
- Excess of £400
- Armco covered up to £4k
- 2 days TF

Seems like a no-brainer.

That does seem like a good deal but personally I would take the calculated risk and go for it. It would definitely be worth it if it doesn't cost much more for a 20-30k car. I will be giving them a call, thanks.

My policy in the UK covers me for 6 trackdays for 450 a year and those trackdays can include Spa or other european circuits (not the ring). I did a trackday at the ring with no insurance, but the car was fairly cheap and it was very quiet. Luckily, no incidents.

You can get an online quote in about 5min. Worth giving it a go for a benchmark.

ETA - No affiliation, obviously.

That seems pretty reasonable to me.
