Auto industry always pays naff rates, its why I never bother looking at them. Unfortunately the pool they are recruiting from includes aerospace, space and these days Oil&Gas. Aerospace and space PA is about £35/hr on average, O&G pays about £50/hr on average. In the QA/PA world the processes are all fairly similar with about 80% cross over so there is a fair movement between them. The only auto job Ive even contemplated recently was last yr with the Merc F1 boys to be their Quality Manager but I was still too expensive for them.

So yes when your pool rate is averaging double what you are paying then you are going to struggle to fill the roles.

I did a contract QE role in McLaren cars for a while. They were employing cheap foreign (Pilipino, Portuguese and Australian on a temp visa) as they couldn’t get people (apart from me 8() on at the rates they were paying.

After I left, may be 6 months later, I phoned my old boss as I really fancied doing the P1, and he just straight out told me they couldn’t afford me, and I was right at the bottom possible wage that you would ever even consider as a contractor.

I'm sorry if I come across as arrogant, but I really think it's insulting.
Why should you be insulted by someone advertising a low rate? If they'd specifically said that's all you in particular were worth it would be a different story.

Clearly they're not asking for the going rate though. I notice that a lot of my old colleagues that jumped ship to JLR have left again.
I think it's insulting to the engineering profession generally, not me personally.

What's the pay like for Chassis engineers or Powertrain engineers these days working for the likes of Bentley / Aston Martin / Lotus / Jaguar / McLaren ?
What about at BMW M / Porsche ? Is it hard to get a job with BMW or Porsche these days ?
Do these companies recruit heavily from the likes of Imperial College Mech Eng etc ?

Thank you very much in advance :-)

What would you expected Ltd rates to be for expereinced Manufacturing/Production/Quality Engineers to be? I'm paying way more than the rates above!

as I still work for jlr going into details on an internet forum probably isn't going to do me any favours till I've secured alternate employment.

I hear that but if that is low what is the expectation for an auto/Aero or whatever manufacturing company? £25 sounds like the rate you'd pay for somebody who has a degree and 3 years experience who has just ventured into contracting.

Into the £30's depending on the conditions. Lots of travel means a bit more. The big factor as well as the rate is the hours involved and if they are capped or un capped.

As a contract Quality Engineer, I wouldnt look at £25/hour even if it was uncapped hours, right no my doorstep and had no stress.
