How amazing is PH?

People help someone who lack basic English skills to scam his way into a University and they are congratulating themselves?

I sincerely hope the OP is found out sooner rather than later, he and his "helpers" should be ashamed of themselves.
Funny that, the Personal Director at the last FTSE 100 Company I worked at couldn't spell to save his life, and his grammar wasn't much better, but he was a good personal director.

Why shouldn't people help a young lad who is keen to get a career, and who has asked for a bit of help?

You sound like a proper Mr Scrooge.

THe fact the o/p knew he needed help and went about obtaining help in a polite and courteous manner shows a bit of initiative in my book.
I wouldn't call it cheating.
Me neither. Well done OP and clap for those who helped him.

Pity I missed this first time round. Well done on the OP for seeking help and well done to the PHers who helped.

Sometimes I can despair of some of the comments on PH bit there are times when the "good guys" come to the fore.

Well done everybody.

He's recognised a weakness and has asked for some help. Thats perfectly reasonable and shows some common sense.

I'm definitely not ashamed for helping out.

Well done OP.

Yes, the last thing we want is uni places going to people who show a bit of initiative. Because in the real world of employment, if you have a task ahead of you, and you recognise that you have weaknesses in certain aspects required to carry out the task successfully, the last thing you should do is ask seek help from available sources. Far better that you just plough on regardless and fk it right up. rolleyes

Yes, let's put this into a few real-world examples.

1. Someone is putting a tender together for a large contract but doesn't know how to do the numbers, so checks with a company accountant first who offers a few pointers on how to do this task. Tender is submitted and is successful, primarily because of the content but also because the numbers were fine and clearly presented. But in REALIST's world, this person has scammed the client.

2. An example from my line of work. A newly appointed academic is submitting their first proposal to a research council however seeks advice from those who have done it before and know the language and the content reviewers will look for. They act on the advice given and are successful. However in REALIST's silly little world this person has just scammed the UK government, as ultimately they pay for this.

The above two examples are collegiate working and, to some extent, mentoring. What the OP put together was good already, backed up with qualifications and experience which met the minimum requirements. I can't speak for anyone else who helped but all I did was offer some guidance on how to get the key points across.

As suggested, OP simply used initiative. Now, offering people cash in exchange for a fully drafted personal statement is a different matter entirely and would be fitting of REALIST's stupid comment.

Get a life.

You don't know his story, what if he is dyslexic etc and was just requesting a bit of help?

The OP could be a very intelligent and academic person, maybe the next Adrian Newey or similar and you think his chances at University should be simmered down to his spelling & grammar ability?

I just thought I should check back in here to give you guys an update.

I have recieved offers from all of my 5 university choices, all for Masters no less. I had an interview yesterday at a well respected RG university and the lecturer that I had it with said that she was specifically impressed by my personal statement and how much my passion came through when reading it. she then told me I would definitly be recieving an offer and they would love to see me studying there.

So just to close, those that gave your advice, help and time, it has been invaluable and I cannot thank you enough.

Well done. Sure your personal statement helped you get your foot in to door but it was your interview which ultimately got you the offer.

Now just make sure you get the grades!

Well done mate, both for getting the spot and for ignoring the dhead in the corner.

Dont forget this isnt the end of what ph has to offer i was only doing a HNC in engineering but got stuck a few times asked the question on here and got an answer which helped guide me.

I truly believe that ph is the best site on the internet as mostly we'll all muck in to help each other, ive seen cars brought over from france when people lose licenses and fish water shared when starting an aquarium , so dont be afraid to ask again if you need help with the course.

Not that good id be any good mind i struggled with the HNC and have a degree in storytelling (marketing)

Thought i'd pop in to give you guys an update.

Today I have just received the news I have successfully got an internship at a very good company based at MIRA in Nuneaton doing Engine Calibration stuff! Feels like a dream

Just want to say thanks to all that has contributed previously in the thread, never ever imagined in a million years I would be in this position.
