Enlightened global organisation.......

They do not care where i am, as long as the work is done.
Yes, I've worked for a similarly enlightened global organisation for over 7 years - 5 of those from home. Then moved to an extremely progressive consultancy which was like the stone age, anyone who worked from home was treated like a skiving pariah....

Are you self employed ? or have you lucked out and managed to find an enlightened employer that isn't stuck in the stone age ?
Enlightened employer in my case.

We're a small company and we are dotted around Europe. We can live wherever we like because there's no one place in the world that's ideally located for client visits.

I only see my boss/colleagues perhaps 4 times a year unless we're visiting the same client or maybe at a conference. Similarly to what someone else said earlier in this thread, meeting up with boss and colleagues just seems to involve getting very drunk.

What a bizarre notion in the context of this thread.

Why you would chose to live in one of the worlds costliest cities (and the antithesis of what those on this thread are seeking - sun, sea, quality of life), is beyond me.

Bill London rates, live in S of France, Spain, Balearics, Italy etc.

I went self-employed, partly driven by the fact the only way I could live life the way I wanted in such an archaic industry, was by leaving PAYE and set up by myself. I work in the legal field and its very much bums on seats, notwithstanding the fact that 99% of work is by phone (including Court hearings under 1 hour) or by email.

That's it in a nutshell.

It's exactly what we do.

Except I live in Yorkshire because it's the best place on the planet.

I think local taxation is a consideration too - unless you move to Greece where nobody seems to be bothered to pay any...

This thread is making me very, very jealous.

I'd consider Lisbon. Great city, great weather, great connectivity, bit cheaper than Spain too.

Lake District/Dales? At least all summer anyway, get a place deep within and kids will love being outdoors.

Carlisle Lake District Airport is planning to expand and take domestic/international flights.

Funnily enough, so do I when "home".

Me too. But I must admit the climate is starting to annoy me.

I know a few contractors who live in the Algarve. They do 3 days mid-week in London and Friday thru Monday on a golf course (I mean working their little socks off remotely, obviously). Families stay out there.

How young - is schooling needed now, or in the near future?

I know many have to get on with it, but just dropping kids into a school can be hard for them.

Another living in Athens with a young family. Athens is ok but drive outside of it and the Greek mainland is a great place to explore with all of the islands a short hop away by flight or ferry. The food is also a plus.

This is how I work, and have done since the late 1990s. London clients are 3hrs door-to-door. But I could work pretty much anywhere - but Yorkshire is pretty fab, apart from the rain.

I'd happily try another country for a year or 2 but I really don't like hot weather and pretty much everywhere I've thought of going has hotter summers than I currently get. Colleagues are currently living in France, Spain, Czech Republic, Scotland and a couple of us in England. We're a U.K. based company but more employees now live in Prague than the U.K. At least it's a decent city for piss ups team get togethers.

I would suggest Geneva as a fantastically well located city in the centre of Europe. A cosmopolitan, city with flights to anywhere in the world, access to the mountains at the weekends.

The downside is cost, it ain't cheap!

We spend three months of the year based near St Emilio in the Dordogne. 45 minutes to Bordeaux airport and I can be anywhere I need to go in Europe, or hop to Heathrow, Charles de Gaulle or Schiphol for intercontinental

Global IT or consultancies tend to be well connected, don't have a "must be in office" culture and flexible on location. Much more outcome measured than activity measured. Lots of my peers are dotted around the world.

We still work silly hours, but it is more home/remote.
