Hi,

I am 25 and currently a bank manager for a High Street Bank, i enjoy my job the majority of the time however I feel like it isn't necessarily the job I want to do forever. I must admit that I would love job where I am earning a great salary and I understand that this takes time and experience to work your way up to. I earn approx £35K per year and have a good pension etc however I feel like I need a change from 'Retail'. I have looked at the options of become a wealth manager within my current company which would be possible providing I study for and pass my DIPFA exams. Is this the route to go down or should I look to do something completely different where I could use my existing skills learnt as a Bank Manager? I have always worked for this bank since college and have a keen interest in finance, my passion lies with cars and outdoor pursuits such as clay/game shooting.

Thanks

Is there much future in high street banking? At your age you're probably wise to look for something different and more resilient.

Thanks for your advice, thats the boat I am in at the moment. I agree with you around the future of high street banking. It is one industry that is rapidly changing.

I'd look to take the exams, especially if the costs are covered from above.

Having those pieces of paper should then allow you to move into a better career, much more easily and at a higher pay grade, either inside your current company or for another. The added benefit is that you're still being paid whilst you study so keep the CV in tact with no breaks and you're in a good place should it not all come together properly.

Just beware though, if your company was to sponsor your exams there is a possibility of them reclaiming the costs if you did move within a certain time period, dependent on the internal polices/contracts/agreements.

Misses works in a banks head office. Big building, loads of staff. It's excellent for her, great career progression so far with the right attitude. Job for life, hopefully!

Maybe consider a move to a head office?

Definitely move in the HQ, much better roles there for internal and external career prgression. Forget being in branch as a lacky or "wealth" manager.

Do they have an investment banking or asset management arm? I'd be looking there first before looking outside the company.
