So I've managed to get a Parts Apprenticeship at an Accident Repair Centre. It's 3 years, reasonable money for an Apprentice (as obviously they normally get paid next to nothing) and with a guaranteed job at the end (if I pass the apprenticeship). After that I'll work at said centre for a few years and either work my way up, or go somewhere else where I can work my way up. At least that's the plan, I know that lots can change in 3 months, nevermind 3 years!
congrats! See how it goes Good work OP.
We're S.West based, we've been struggling for ages to find an apprentice & trainees.
Our apprentices get fully funded courses & end up with some really good qualifications once complete, Elecrical/Commercial gas, as well as a big jump in pay.
We've had next to no applications in the past few months for an apprentice, i've probably had 10 applications for another trainee role within the business. (Office CAD/design work).
All of the applications bar 1 have been a non-starter.
We don't even want someone with a degree, or years of experience, just basically, a school leaver who's willing to forge a career, listen & want to get on, most of said applicants haven't even spell-checked their CV's.
As it's an apprentice role, they begin on an apprentice wage, which then steadily increases, the trainee role is a minimum wage salary start (or just above), increasing once the probationary period is complete / more experience is gained, we're having guys applying who want in excess of double that with no experience whatsoever, other than working in the local supermarket.

I'm 2 weeks in now, so here's an update:
The first week was "shadowing", so I could see what everyone else in the company does and thus what there stresses and strains are (equally the things that are piss easy for them). That was pretty rubbish...
However, the second week I was actually in the Parts department and it is soo much better. I've got the Parts processing part down to a tee, although being a weakling I have had to have help lifting some things (Fun Fact: Mercedes Vito rear doors weigh about 5 million tons). I'm also 90% there with the dry goods ordering system software thing. The week coming I'll be learning the whole invoice processing and actually going round and seeing what dry goods are needing ordering.
Apparently I'm doing very very well. Although that may be because I'm overqualified, so much so to the point many of the people in the workshop think I shouldn't be wasting my time there and encourage me to get out and do something better in life as soon as I can. I don't plan on leaving anytime soon though, I had enough trouble trying to find this!

Keep looking g for the right candidate! I was told that there have been 4 other apprentices before me doing the same thing! 2 left on their own accord and 2 they had to dismiss for being too "eh, I don't care".We're S.West based, we've been struggling for ages to find an apprentice & trainees.

A few things....
University is not the be all and end all, I'm 28 and went but within my friendship group the one person that didn't go to university is doing the best off all, helped in part by no student loan debts and having an extra 3 years in the career he chose.
Do tell, how much are your repayments on your "student loan debt" as a percentage of your monthly salary?University is not the be all and end all, I'm 28 and went but within my friendship group the one person that didn't go to university is doing the best off all, helped in part by no student loan debts and having an extra 3 years in the career he chose.
