Trials of Finding New Job
Discussion
Good luck to those with upcoming interviews.
I applied for job at the beginning June. 3 weeks later got an email to set up a phone interview for the following week.
Half hour interview, had a quick chat then told there were a number of competency based questions, answered the first one and the guy said he wasn't going to ask the rest as I clearly knew what I was talking about. A further chat about things and he only concern was that I was over qualified for the role, which I am but I looking to get back to work after an extended time since redundancy. Discussed the future and opportunities within the company and his own career situation. After about half an hour he said he had wanted he needed and would come back to me later that day. I'm thinking it will be a further interview but 3 hours later he calls and verbally offers me the job. Took about 8 to 10 days for all the paperwork to come through, all completed online and I due to start week commencing the 29th July.
Compared to my previous role it is a step back in some ways, but I'm treating it for now as a step in a different direction. Main thing it is a permanent role, guaranteed hours, local etc. and compared to my recent agency work, minimum wage and zero hours it will be good to get back into a routine, regular money etc.
For those of you still looking, hang in there and be strong. Some of posts on here I can feel the frustration of some of the posters in their search for a job and I know how you feel. When you don't have anything else to focus on, it can be draining and difficult to explain to others, especially those with a job.

Have a work trial early next week for 3 days.
never done it before, great idea, job is far away so company do it a lot I think. Accom is paid, but work is unpaid which is fair.
Anyone ever done a work trial before? it is sort of engineering, manufacturing work, wiring, etc.
I've only ever heard of this in a bar in Cardiff where they got students to do a free shift and never employed them. never done it before, great idea, job is far away so company do it a lot I think. Accom is paid, but work is unpaid which is fair.

I've worked as a manufacturing engineer for 31 years. And NEVER heard of it.
I worked at one place where the shop.floor recruitment involved taking anyone from.the agency, and if they lasted a week taking.them.another week
And I've seen an interview that had candidates assembling parts for an hour and if they hit British Standard 80 time, they were taken on.
USUALLY companies take staff on trial with only a weeks notice required in the first 6 months. But this is the era of zero hour contracts so working for 3 days for nothing sounds like the brave stupid world we live in
But hey accommodation. So.thats tax efficient all round. Companies can pay relocation etc tax free and claim.it as a business expences.
I hope it's not the sttest place in town.
GOOD LUCK and chod speed.
Interesting.
I am taking it as an extended interview.
The facility is very remote, so getting people to interview is tough as the local skills are not there, so this seems their favoured way to recruit. Gives both sides a chance to see, local area, etc, yes it's a bit odd, but I thought it sounded OK.
I don't think or hope it is not an environment you suggest, the work is quite specialised so I doubt it.
But we will see.

Doonreay, Sellafield or at Barrow-in-Furness would be my guess of destination in the first instance. I am taking it as an extended interview.

Had a pal who flew (light commuter plane) for years into Barrow every week, then about a year after moving to Barrow, spent years flying out of it to another site - amazing the speed a project progresses when you dont have anything to do but go back to a hotel room.
Good luck to everyone searching. I'm back looking as I've been living abroad for the last eight months. Had one interview and didn't get it, have another one tomorrow morning but it's not ideal distance wise.
It's tougher out there than I remember, but it largely seems dependant on what areas you look for.

Interesting the views expressed in here.
It is is difficult out there for certain industries. I am looking around at the moment (I actually work for a recruitment company in marketing).
Interviews are definitely coming easier with experience in my particular field. But looking to specialise more in PPC really if I can.
Biggest frustration is lack of communication from employers and missing deadlines.
That being said I have had 3 first interviews, bagged a 2nd interview on Friday for a PPC job (one of the few) earning similar money, less hours and less commuting!
Presentation nearly finished discussing my current experience. Lucky the interviewer is a petrol head....not sure about the other chap I will be meeting this time round.

I had a phone interview for a mobile phone sales job three weeks ago. Passed that. Had a face to face follow up interview last week. Was told I would find out by yesterday at the latest whether or not I had the job as they need to get recruitment sorted.
It's late on Tuesday now and I haven't heard a peep. Do enjoy it when people can't be arsed to keep their promises.

When completing the equality questionnaire I've started ticking that I am transgender/lgmt/of ethnic origin/disabled/all of the above so that it potentually increases the chances of me getting an interview
I used to recruit for London Borough of Hackney. If you could’ve added HIV positive to that lot you’d be in.funkyrobot said:

I had this last week. Interview on Thursday, went really well in my opinion, asked when I could start etc. Told me he would let me know by end of play Friday (the next day, not the week after)It's late on Tuesday now and I haven't heard a peep. Do enjoy it when people can't be arsed to keep their promises.
Now Wednesday and despite me even e-mailing, I've had no correspondence. I am fine with not getting the role, but at least have the decency to contact me, even if it is to tell me I'm unsuccessful. I can then ask for constructive criticism and move on with my life.
Really unprofessional.

I'm sure I've said it before but in instances like this you really have to question the competence of the interviewer to make sense of the unprofessional way in which recruitment is handled.
In this case it was the MD. Small (30 people) firm. Whole experience seemed rather lackadaisical and casual. Does not excuse the behaviour. Really does take liberties with what little confidence and motivation I have left at the moment. Oh well, we go again.Jimmy No Hands said:

Still heard nothing from the mobile phone shop. Absolute waste of time.
I even called them to chase them up and I've still heard nothing.
It could be that your second choice . They’re holding out for the first choice to confirm.I even called them to chase them up and I've still heard nothing.
If they didn't think you were "appointable" they would have told you straight away.

I've moved on now.
