i work a 4 on / 1 off rotation but the work location but is where I live anyway and only involves a 40hr 5 day week. I get a serviced apartment paid for, a daily allowance to cover expenses and for my time off I can choose a flight to anywhere I want to go or I can elect to stay here. I make my own schedule, so the rotation isn’t really strict and can be flexed as I need it to.

there are downsides but I get all the benefits of a local contract and all those of a FIFO. i was previously on a local contract in the same location, so spent ages combing the contract looking for a catch!

I'mm a great lover of radio comedies, I think they represent one of the best forms of comedy. To my great shame I only recently discovered John Finnemore, starting with Cabin Pressure which is a work of genius.

Yes me too on both points. They work so well in your head and the visualizations are mental ones.

I've only recently started listening to his Souvenir Program which is just epic.

Cabin Pressure is next.

Imagine the week on / week off offshore techs, travel out to wind turbines everyday by boat.

Start shift
Wind above 12m/s - cant use the crane - come back onshore - go home
Waves above 2.5m - cant get off the boat without getting creamed by the deck chasing you up the turbine ladder - come back onshore - go home
End of shift

You can imagine how many days off those lads have had in the last couple of months!

Lots of travel from what I do now, proper pension from when I worked full time. Stimulating work!

I'd argue Cabin Pressure is even better... takes a bit of getting used to and re-listening.

Thanks - Monday morning for my second interview. Will be nice to be able to drop the youngest off at school and take the dog for a walk in the morning if I get it!
And... right there, we have reasons why companies don’t like people ‘working’ from home wink
I work from home and try and make sure I'm at my desk during working hours, but half the time I ring colleagues they're obviously out with the dog or in a shopping centre etc.

The thing I fnd astonishing is if I step away from my desk I can almost guarantee my boss or our admin person will call.

No two days are the same. Never know what the next call is going to be.

Kinda left alone to do what I want when jobs allow.

Also can be nosey...if I see a road that I don't know where it goes, I can go down it and no one cares! Doesn't look strange!

We all have relatively unlimited WFH. However we also have Skype which tells the world and his wife if you're logged in, if you're at your desk, or how long you've been away from the PC...Big Brother eat your heart out biggrin

I have to go to work every day, but I get to take my dog with me. Every now and again, I look for another job, but nothing would compensate for not having the bellend next to me all day long.

I went down the self employment route nearly a year ago as a tree surgeon. I had had office based jobs for the last 28 years nearly and felt it was time to do something for myself. I love it and wish I had done it years ago. It has been a real eye opener and the stress at times is pretty intense, but overall, being my own boss is just about as good as it gets.
