Does "dispatched" from Amazon actually mean its dispatched?
Discussion
I ordered some outdoor lights from Amazon for a job, I've had them before a few times when they were available via Prime without any bother, this time they were a non Prime order but said they would be here in a few days.
I ordered and got a message a day later saying they had been dispatched. Yesterday I got another message saying I have been refunded for the order but Amazon say they are still due to be delivered in a couple of days. When you check on the lights for sale they are stating out of stock until October and you can pre-order them.
So I would imagine they haven't got any stock to send me and have refunded me but how can they dispatch something they haven't got? Or if it has been dispatched then why refund me and why is amazon still showing the items as being on the way to me?

No, it doesn't. It just means postage has been purchased or supposedly purchased and the seller has marked it as dispatched in Amazon Seller Central, the seller's 'control panels' so to speak.
In fact I think the dispatched notification might be automatic on purchase of postage.

Dispatched usually means the item has been manifested to the carrier (an electronic record sent from the sales platform to the carrier saying "item with unique id 'blah' which is h x w x d and weighs x KG to be delivered to this address with these delivery terms") which tells the carrier to expect a parcel in to its network.
In this case it sounds like the seller has no stock so refunds you and but hasn't updated Amazon.

There are a few anomalies in the system. I got a kettle on Thursday that had a fault, so I processed a return and replace, a fresh order popped up for the replacement and I sent the faulty one back same day. Then I read that the problem is a design rather than a manufacturing fault so the replacement would have the same problem, so I cancelled it. The first kettle has returned/replaced status, the second kettle has cancelled status, but I don't get any money back because it was processed at zero cost. So I've got no kettle and no refund, will need to speak to a real person.

Domino's order update system works on average speeds. So sometimes they can say delivered, when the pizza hasn't even left the oven!
Maybe Amazon is similar...
