Hi All,

I'm an ex-army officer (6 years service) currently looking for a new career. My experience is mainly as an operations manager and leader in unpredictable and high pressure environments. I've also been trained in project management (Agile and Lean) and have experience in sales (albeit retail).

Unsurprisingly I'm mad about cars so the automotive career is a natural choice and I'm posting this for career suggestions and networking.

The sorts of roles I would be interested in are project management, client services, operations, logistics, sales and any managerial roles. However hopefully you will be able to broaden my search with further suggestions.

Thank you very much for any help in advance. Feel free to PM, CV available upon request!

Lots of industries available to you, but this sprang to mind based on what you’ve posted:

https://www.aboutamazon.co.uk/amazon-fulfilment/mi...

Assume you’re also taking advantage of the full career transition offer available to you, which should also provide training and networking opportunities, including those provided by:

https://www.officersassociation.org.uk/

Assume too that your CV has been fully civilianised?

Good luck!

Hi Rog,

I was hoping you’d reply, seen your responses to others with this sort of topic.

Have Amazon on-going (various roles) and yes using OA. I was using this to see suggestions for the automotive industry in particular though... be that a salesman at a high end garage or business development at a manufacturer.

CV wise please may I send it to you to see what you think? If so please PM me your email address (if that’s how you usually do it)!

I’ve dropped you an email; delighted to pass comment on your generic CV.

Re automotive sales; I can only commend making direct contact with those organisations you’re interested in, regardless of whether they’re advertising or not. A CV and a cover letter explaining how you think you’d add value may be a useful first step.

Maybe also worth ensuring that your LinkedIn profile is top notch and you highlight there what you’re looking for next. You could then start to network with those organisations that you’d be interested in.

Hope that little helps

I know Jim at Mission Motorsport has some good links in with JLR, or atleast they used to. Might be worth dropping them a line.

If you're REME I wonder If we know each other, I got out in 2018.

Didn't find the OA that useful TBH, although I haven't followed a typical retired Officers career path, I'm now a train driver.

Most of my friends now work in the city, something I couldn't bare to do even for the big wages. All the major firms in the city seem to have an ex forces point of contact though if that's your thing.

I think high end car sales are going to position themselves more and more to a online presence (see volvo's latest announcements on the subject)

Manufacturers head office roles in sales development would I feel be a more secure avenue (if such a thing as secure employment exists these days).

Dont overlook the motorsports side either they are impressive organisations who value the skills you will have picked up over the years.

I used to recruit for Mercedes at Brixworth along time ago it it was supprising the roles they asked for.

Linked in is very good to start cultivating relationships.

And I would be getting my cv out to as many hr depts and recruiters in the fields you are interested in as possible.

Good luck.

Thank you for the replies, I have taken a lot of the advice over the last few weeks and got to the final stage of two different Amazon interviews (4 hrs each) which were brutal but a great learning experience.

Aside from cars my other real passion is property so I'm trying to find work in that industry whilst doing a masters in a related field.

Not sure if IT is something you’d look at, but there are plenty of PM, IT Ops and Service Management jobs going in the SW. MOD contracts.

I'm ex reme myself, although a lowly full screw. Perhaps our paths have crossed at some point.

Be wary of Amazon, I know alot of ex reme ranging from Lance jack's through to WO and LE's.
They've all done well in getting though to Amazon's elusive final stage interviews only to be told their actually looking for civilian quals. They are from what I've seen, absolute time wasters !

However, hopefully your a change to the norm, I do have a very good mate (also former screw reme) who landed a area managers job with them. We now rarely ever hear from him as the job has taken over and cost him everything.
I personally, would never recommend them after seeing how they use, abuse and split you out !

Thanks very much, I just tried but it said that you don't allow it... quite likely I'm doing something wrong, very new here!

I would love to hear your advice though so please may you message me? A few others have managed to so I guess my privacy settings allow it.

I think mission Motorsport was mentioned above. They have a program/sub organisation called https://www.missionautomotive.org/ just making sure you didn't miss that.

A mate (ex REME full screw) has just this week left JLR to go to Amazon. At first I'd assumed he'd been made redundant as it seems barmy to me.

The pay is about the same from what I can gather.

Interesting regarding how hard they work area managers, I have heard a lot of that recently with Amazon operations roles so now feeling a little glad I was unsuccessful there!

Ex-Army, bought letting & estate agency franchise. Gimme a ring if you want to talk about that. Definitely potential to work while studying.
