I wouldnt really use my funding towards quals fpr siemens as you have a good chance of getting in if your ex RAF.
if you know anyone in siemens try and get them to talent spot you.

Sorry to jump in at a late stage on this subject. I'm currently a comms engineer with the RAF, i've got 18 months to serve until completion of my 22 years. I have a resettlement package available to me but after many hours on google i'm struggling to find any courses to start working towards a career as a wind turbine tech. I'm based in lincolnshire and would be able to do evening college or possibly some day release courses but don't know which are the best options as I don't want to waste my resettlement time and money doing the wrong courses. Given my location I am interested in this future career as there is a lot of investment in the humber area. Any advice please?

thanks in advance
Daz
Hi,

I don't know what formal training an RAF comms engineer completes, but I imagine it to provide a good level of electrical competence? Which is high on list of must haves.

But as above, just apply, rather than wasting money on specific wind qualifications. As if you don't have the experience required, a wind qualification will not help.

If you got in with Siemens you would just be put through them all again during your basic training anyway.

Very true GSP,
ive heard for lads paying of course off there own back, and then landing a job with siemens then they ask them to do the courses all over again,
and the same with lads paying for offshore sea survival and safety passports, then then siemens putting them on it again...
dont think it helps if youve done the courses before you apply.
its all about your CV and passed experience.
the last 10-15 lads I know who have had jobs, didnt have any siemens courses under there belts..

A Siemens course simply won't help, because as you've just said literally anyone can buy a 5 day course... But a qualification achieved after 5 days does not give you competence, you need proven experience to support it.

Just apply for the main manufacturers Daz, with what you have said, it's likely you'll have the skills, experience and background we look for.

Thanks for the info guys, I will get my CV across to them and see where it goes from there. As I said i've still got 17/18 months yet so might be a bit early, just don't want to leave it until the last minute.

thanks again.

How are you getting on windman - IIRC its just over 12 months that you got onboard, hows your 1st year treating you?

Hi Guys

Interesting thread. Not sure if I'm allowed to do this on here but a heads up for those old hands looking for pastures new.

I work for EDF Energy Renewables and am currently recruiting for our expanding in-house O&M department (onshore). Without wishing to dash the newbie's hopes of becoming a wind turbine technician, I am ONLY looking for EXPERIENCED techs (probably 2 years+ turbine service and repair experience, good elec/mech troubleshooting ability, AT status under WTSR) for Vestas V80/V90 sites based near Hexham and also in the Scottish Borders (between Dunbar and Galashiels). Also looking for REpower techs for MM82 sites based in the Fenlands. These will be site based roles so not a lot of travelling, although some sharing around sites may be required. Take a look at www.edfenergy.com/careers (then Job search, Search openings, put 'renewables' in the keyword search box and hit search).

All the best

I'm on the Lincs/LID offshore windfarms, have been with Siemens for about 4 months now and it's great. Well worth putting in the effort with the job hunting/chasing.
Steep learning curve and with it being offshore the environment can be pretty "exciting" at times!

Really well, great industry to be in just now, everybody looking at O&M and expanding. Had a few overseas trips / training courses, getting decent money and genuinely enjoy the being out & about nature of the industry.

Once offshore is fully up and established it's going to be good too, just need to get them built up off both Scottish coasts!

I'm a travelling tech, started on site middle of Nov at gunfleet sands. Very steep learning curve once you get going. Had my level 5 course this wk, unfortunately no level 7 courses available next year. Absolutely loving it.

Hi windman
Not all, yet, but heading that way. As older projects come out of warranty, we are establishing in-house teams to continue the service and maintenance. For new projects we will be involved from day one. This is probably the path most utilities will follow in time.
