hi, have an opportunity to buy an e30 m3 - 58k miles - £35k

it has a tatty interior and some paint flaking externally..not in the best of conditions cosmetically..but i'm considering it still with the low mileage/ what should be generally rust free bod...

any advice on inspections/checks before buying..? aim is to modify it /colour change etc hence trying to find one for around £35k base price..

If it's still got an s14 and you have the cash, grab it. I still regret having to sell mine.

Do you really want one as a car or to fix up and flip for more £?

i want one to make it my own e30 m3 to drive. not to flip. if it was to flip, i would buy as it is and get it tidy'd up

i want to make it look like a red misano evo 2. have bits upgraded so that any weak areas improved and drives a tad more like a modern car etc.. been weighing up spending big on an original collectable but the prices have gone too far. I would rather get one i want built and drive it..

got to weigh up the cost of buying a jap import ,no rust, wrong colour, tatty vs a european red colour, decent paint job and interior. but prob for more dosh..

Basically rust anywhere. Particularly:

1. Area under washer reservoir
2. Front cross member
3. Shock tower / wing junction
4. Bulkhead under fuse box - can only really be seen properly by removing sound deadening in engine bay or carpet from inside and lying in the passenger foot well
5. Scuttle - remove plastic vents
6. Factory jacking points & foot well / bulkhead junction - remove carpet
7. Floor pan generally
8. Outer & inner rear arches - remove rear door cards
9. Area around sunroof
10. Battery tray
11. Rear panel behind number plate
12. Wheel well
13. Inner / outer sills

They hide their rust really well and even tidy looking examples can be horribly rotten. Some panels such as rear arches are NLA at the moment so are hard to track down and expensive.

There's a couple of leggy ones in the classified at present. A red 175K miler at £32K, and a silver 150K one from Munich Legends at £36K...

thank you- this is why I was thinking of a japanese import.. hopefully less issues with rust etc
I have seen pictures of a sport evo bought at auction - with the panels off.. horrendous rust underneath..went for over £70k!

Sounds like a bargin buy it! but like all bargin's they are that for a reason! more than likely it will need a lot of welding.
modifying it at that mileage will devalue it.
If you can't do the work yourself add at least 20k.

That’s some change of heart..I recall you declining my totally rust free and original car outright since it was non full history, Japan market car? You have definitely been in the market for a very long time!

I tend to agree.

But I wonder if you took a 180 thousand mile SportEvo. Would that be OK to be (tastefully) modified/improved during restoration?

interesting thought about a high miler S.E.
I am not sure about devaluing it - if it already started bottom end at 35 and its tatty..the only way is up no? agree add 20 though..

... if you want tatty, there's always this: https://angliacarauctions.co.uk/classic/saturday-2...

Do the convertibles carry a premium or are they simply heavier and/or wobblier?

There's an E34 M5 in the same auction - can't tell anything from the photos except it's in that rather amazing violet paint.

Yes. It sold very quickly after it arrived in the UK. It was fully inspected at a great M3 specialist . Given a very clean bill of health and sold on that basis. Much better that than a rust bucket with lots of stamps for 30pc more money.

yuck! Jap Import (US Spec I'd imagine!)

£45K

https://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/...

SportEvo. Think we've seen this one before. Strong price for a car with that many miles
£90K

1 of 25 Ravaglia's. Tiny mileage and IMO a good price compared to the SE above. £90K
