At these levels using these cars as intended is going to become a lot less common.

How many 2.7 RS' do you see being punted round on track nowadays?
Good point, this car not tracked any more but knows its way around the 'Ring. Will be at PHSS on the 9th.

Plan to drive up from Cornwall for PHSS, so hope it'll be dry!

Have you still got yours and has your usage of the car changed since the increase in perceived value?
Yes, still got mine. 14 years next month.

I originally bought mine because it was a car I always wanted to own. I knew I wasn't going to lose money on it but that was a secondary factor in the decision.

Do I use it as much as I did when I first bought it, no is the answer to that. More due to time than anything else and the fact that you can't park any decent car in a public carpark without some cretin knocking it or opening their car door into your car or some such carelessness, that sort of crap really really gets my goat, so in the DD most of the time and M3 just to go out for drives in really.

If value halved tomorrow would I be concerned, no, as I would still have not lost any money even taking into account inflation and maintenance expenditure and I've still got a car that I always wanted.

Interesting thread to read.

I am in the E36 camp and own a Evolution GT Imola Individual.

I have bought the car because I love how they drive (this is my third) and as an investment (I still use it daily)

The car in my ownership (under a year) has nearly doubled in price and looks to be rising daily. Would I buy ine now at the price it is worth? I think I would be back in another Escort RS Cosworth.

But the bottom line is, as these cars are written off, stolen, broken... you will find the prices raise massively. This is reat for the people who own these cars, terrible for the guys who want to buy one. Eitherway, people looked at these cars in there youth as a dream car... these people are now older and can afford I. They want the best they can get there hands on. I say sit back and enjoy what you have. Use it or store it. Its your car and you can do what you like. I took mine out from a 5 year storage and used it. Wish I didnt as it now needs a deep clean but I have bloody well enjoyed myaelf in the old.girl

Some clown has just paid £54k for a Europameister in the USA.

That is basically a standard car with a fancy leather interior. Granted it had 20k miles from new, but for a non Evo car it's breaking new ground wrt pricing.
Keep in mind that in the USA;

1. There a much bigger percentage of the population with significantly more disposable income compared to the UK
2. BMW's are 'generally' still seen as a prestige, aspirational, higher end brand compared to the UK
3. Collectors like this stand a better and quicker chance of selling when needs be due to the above points.

How much are asking prices in the UK for 20K mile, well kept, entry/base spec examples?

Cheers, Dennis!

You'd need to find one first.

It seems UK cars start at £25k+ nowadays though. I've just increased my agreed insurance value to £30k

As I understand it, it is extremely difficult and expensive to import a car in to the US that is less than 25 years old (Google "US 25 year import rule"). As of the end of this year it will be much easier to import and use a Sport Evo in the US which will surely drive the prices here in Europe higher still, as some US collectors start buying them. I don't know if the market for standard M3s in The States will alter that much but you would think that all the special editions will benefit.

Wait until the CSL is 25 years old!

Hi Benny C

The 25 year old or more rule is for if anyone wishes to import a 'Right Hand Drive' car.

If the car in question is left hand drive, then it can be much younger than that.

Cheers, Dennis!

Is it not still difficult and expensive though? There are hardly any SE E30s or CSLs in The States despite seemingly a fairly large market. I've read on the US forums that it would cost around $10K to import and register a CSL in the US and the car would need to be modified.

Hi,

As per above, there's a much bigger percentage of potential buyers out there who'd not bat an eyelid for the extra expense of importing a much sought after or rare car from abroad. I'm not saying it's 'commonplace' but a good number of cars are indeed imported like that. Another aspect is that US military personel get their belongings shipped and moved for either free or for a very very low amount both out of and back into the USA. You'll often hear of service people in Germany look for cars they'd like to take back as they save thousands on the shipping. I do believe quite a number of E34 M5 Touring's went over to the USA this way. I'm quite sure that when you add up all the enthusiasts for other marques and specific models like this, there's a good amount of cars going over there.

Cheers, Dennis!

Never heard that before, thought it was all to do with if a car complied with the

FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS AND REGULATIONS.

If it doesn't comply regardless of LHD or RHD it has to be 25 year old or more, there are certain exceptions, show cars for example.

Hi,

Apologies for not being a little more thorough with my response, I was picking up on the point of 'RHD' only. To import a vehicle into the USA, it does also need to meet ALL the other criteria, rules and regulations.

http://foreignborn.com/visas_imm/entering_us/7impo...

Legislation can and does change all the time, when I previously enquired a good few years ago now, and asked specifically about RHD, I was told the car must be over 25 years old. When I asked if the car was a LHD version of the same model, I was told it could be less than 25 years old.

Anyone thinking, or that has relatives or friends in the USA and might be wishing to bring in a car to the USA that isn't available there will need to look and research carefully and find out about what's required. I think in this PH forum section, under the 'USA' sub forum, there's some members who've imported their cars to the USA successfully and may well have more recent experiences and tips to provide.

Cheers, Dennis!

That's a genuine sport Evo as far as I can tell. The other one is a 1991 2.3 E30 M3. Feel free to correct me.
