TBH, a good mooch through the iDrive brings to life a lot of the cars capabilities & features in a straight forward fashion. Is also a users manual in the iDrive which is very intuitive.Am sure there's more I don't know too. But like the poster above only had mine since October and just ran in and since the. Yes I must make more of an effort ..How you getting on with yours with the winters on? Has it quashed your optimism regarding winters??
Been on anymore runs? I've been struggling to get onto new SCD forum but weathers been dire and now it's just getting cold instead of wet! Roll on Spring

It's not just the whole 1st gear/2nd gear thing from start off. It's the fact that modern throttles are electronic. When you just want to tickle it, it gives you creep mode which is a fixed speed. When you want to set off into a busy roundabout or out of a side road but you don't want to light up the afterburners, it gives you a momentary delay between depressing the accelerator an inch or two and getting a response. It's not turbo lag (in that regard the M5 is actually pretty good). Instead it's as if an engineer specified that the throttle should give a range of five different outputs based on five different inputs. Some people won't be bothered by it.
Maybe I'm spoiled and my standards are unreasonably high - it's why I keep two cars in my garage which are the very definition of old school control freakery: the integrale and the 996 GT3. Primary controls are unimpeachable and the chassis on both is so inherently brilliant that (making allowances for modern tyres and chassis rigidity) they remain an absolute benchmark. Almost nothing modern I've driven has that balance between immersion and daily usability. I could mention Caterham and the like but that would be a pointless comparison with a 2 tonne M5.
Anyway, it's still an excellent car. I just haven't come to love it in the way I thought I would. But that may be because I can't really love anything with modern electronically regulated powertrains.
You clearly have very good taste! never tried an intergrale but can only imagine how good it must be. Gt3 is probably the pinnacle of how a car should feel. Thank you!I use efficient occasionally - when I want to switch my brain off and just crawl in traffic usually. I switch to sport mainly to lessen the effect of the throttle delay when pulling out at junctions.
Strangely I also find that switching between throttle maps makes little difference to fuel economy, but then most of my mileage is on the motorway so perhaps that negates the difference.

Only been out on 1 lengthy drive with the Winters on & that was late November & it was 15 degrees so they performed terribly. Certainly slowed me down as the grip was at best strange although not dangerous, just different so wish i'd still had my MPSS fitted. Am doing the same drive in 2 weeks so hopefully it will be cold & i can see them in a better light.How you getting on with yours with the winters on? Has it quashed your optimism regarding winters??

Not done any SCD drives as nothings caught my eye yet & as you say the weather hasn't been conducive with playing out. Hope to get out soon though.

They are great in cold wet weather, probably brilliant in snow (it's not snowed since I bought mine!) but squishy in warm dry weather as we've had for the last 12 weeks.

Also, it just wants to keep going faster, so watch the speed and license - it's to easy to give it a squirt in the wrong place.
I made the decision of getting a fast bike and 320D when i replaced. The 320D was a sensible practical move based on cash, license, and towing ability. The bike... not so much on any of those points.

Got a great deal on my Winters so would have been rude not to try them out. They're fine under normal conditions even when the temps are non seasonal, however when galloping on they show their limitations very quickly & don't instil much confidence. Hopefully my next long journey will be in more seasonal temps & i can see if they shine in their correct conditions, otherwise i'll revert back to my previous thought process & just keep the Summers on all year but select a change to mode of transport should conditions ever get really bad as that will have been 3 Winters on the bounce where Winters would have been pointless.They are great in cold wet weather, probably brilliant in snow (it's not snowed since I bought mine!) but squishy in warm dry weather as we've had for the last 12 weeks.

Only gripes I have are:
Opening the boot when its been raining / water spills everywhere? - not sure who designed that!
Searching for music on the HDD. The behaviour seems to be different than what I had on my X5, whereby if you are listening to a album on the HDD there is no easy way to 'back out' of that album and select another from the list on the drive. You have to do a new search?
Selecting R takes a while to engage - especially if you are attempting to do a quick 3 point turn.
Other than those minor faults - its a stunning piece of equipment and I can't think of a better family car at the minute.
