Yeah I just wondered, because on a normal tyre change they rip out the valves and pop new ones in and I knew these were different.

Thanks for the reply.

Hi Guys,

Got my F10 M5 a few weeks ago, AUC approved but on 82k! Absolute animal the car has one owner and full history at one dealer, oil consumption seems huge so keeping my eye on that and it will go back to BMW if it is out of spec, got quite a big spec with soft close doors full Merino leather including dash, soft close doors, surround view with high beam asist, pleased so far MDM mode is interesting 😅 but getting used to it,

Fingers crossed it stays ok haha

Thanks
Steve

When you say huge oil consumption what do you mean? I've never had an M car that uses oil.

Hi,

It's using around a litre of oil every 600 miles , I think this is still in spec as just found a US service bulletin saying the max use for a Motorsport engine is 2.5 quarts (2.8 litres) per 1000 miles !!!

Here's the link

https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&source=web&a...

Still going to get it checked though.

What oil should I top up with so far I have been using edge 0w-40 ?

Thanks guys
Steve

My M5 used no oil whatsoever in between services - not a drop.

I’d be asking for a reason, that seems like a fair amount every 600 miles yes

I see BMW and engine oil consumption being hefty still hasn't changed...

Nonsense never has one use oil after having 10 bmws.

Nonsense is a bit harsh.

I've not had 10 but the 3 petrols I've had have burnt oil, 2 heavily. It's not exactly an alien concept for them.

Think my E39 and E60 both used a bit of oil later in life.
Strangely, I don't recall my E63 M6 doing that.

I've seen people theorising about how the car's been run in affecting consumption, given the same engines can vary from 1 litre every 600 miles to next to nothing there must be something to it.

Hi Guys

I must add I have been driving it fairly rapidly due to the fact it's new to me, in the 1000 miles I've driven it the CBS service reminder has dropped from 7000 miles to 4500, think I will take it easy between next top ups to see what the real difference is, I always let it warm-up and cool down though, if the oil consumption was still high what would you recommend ? It has AUC warranty would this cover the issue if it was out of spec ?

Thanks
Steve

Mine's using about 1 litre every 7-800 I think. Haven't actually measured it but that's roughly what it feels like...

I do drive like a bit of a loon sometimes/most of the time.

Mines using about 1ltr every 2,000-3,000 miles. It's on 55k and seems to use the same whether it's been cruising on the motorway all month, stop-start around town or 'driven enthusiastically'.

1ltr every 600 miles seems extreme though - not heard anyone else with a figure that high.

I've never had to top up the oil on my car.

Owned the car from new - followed the run in procedure and have had no issues.

Car has been to the nurburgring twice + a few UK track days and is always driven enthusiastically once everything is up to temp.

Miles is now 27k - car is 2015.

Cheers

Me thinks this is the reason for limited oil consumption. Mine over 39k miles only ever had 1/2 litre of oil topped up & that was about 1k miles before a service was due. I loosely followed the run in guide on my F10 & never cane any car until fully up to temp, but did play during the run in period (hard not to), plenty of track work & thus limited oil consumption.

Mine has all the email/internet/concierge gubbins on it. I've never once used any of it.

In fact it'd be safe to say that I've probably used about 25% of the features it has. The car has so much stuff that I have no idea about.

But now it's time for something else. I'd keep it if it weren't for the bloody house refurb. You're going to love yours op. Just tread very lightly through the winter months.

Oil usage on my 2013 F10 has been minimal, ran it in carefully at new and has needed 1 litre a couple of thousand miles before the required oil changes which were around 15k and 30k ..... so just 2 litres in 4 years. I would be a little concerned if it was drinking oil every 1000 miles maybe

Sorry 7-800 like mine or 7-8000 just to be clear.

Thanks

My M6 uses nothing (not even one mark, 250ml, on the electronic dip stick) between oil changes at about 9,000 mile intervals. So don't let them say 'They all do that Sir ...", because it's not true. 1 litre in less than 1000 miles is just not right, even if it is technically within spec.

Mine has asked for a top up a few thousand miles before each service - in fact it just did so tonight. I have a 2015 car on 76k miles all driven by myself. The car was run in following the usual guidance. This doesnt bother me at all - I always keep a litre bottle in the car and drop half in when it asks (about every 6 months at the rate I throw miles on it).

At 600 miles thats a top up with every other tank of fuel... I'd be taking it straight back whether in spec or not. You're going to be consuming 20+ litres of oil between service intervals and it would be a huge inconvenience.
