As stated above, the high oil consumption engines seem to be a result of not following the running in procedure. Is this true?

What is clear is that you can’t ‘fix’ the issue. If you have an oil consuming engine, it’s going to stay that way unless rebuilt.

My findings are the opposite & i've heard of others. It's following the run in procedure to the letter than appears to lead to fairly high oil usage (need for top-ups).

Mine used 1/2 litre outside of service requirements over 40k miles & although i was sympathetic to warming the car up properly, i did push on & use the car enthusiastically during the run-in period (very hard not to).

I concur. If run in too gently then they use a lot of oil. They need to be run in using plenty of revs, up to the running in limit of 5,000, and with lots of engine braking over the first 50-100 miles, then gently until the running in service.

Not much to add to the oil consumption thread. In the 5000 km I have had mine, it has not used any oil.

As regard the hints'n'tips that started the thread, the DCT is the one to get used to. It is fantastic when on the move, but it is not great in stop start traffic or worse yet, in delicate parking manoeuvres. The lack of creep and sensitive throttle (even in Efficient and using the tap of throttle makes it tricky to make small movements. Especially in reverse it is extremely easy to light it up.

Apart from that, it is a very complete package that does the cruiser & bruiser very well, much more so than the E60 M5 because of its superior range and a very muscular torque delivery.

I would personally seek out an LCI car, with the renewed Idrive and steering wheel, and if you can find one with adaptive LED they are truly excellent and gives it a very distinct front end signature.

Mines on 44k miles and I've never had to top up the oil between services. I've just checked it again and it on the max level with 4k mile until the next service.

Just a further note,

My car is using 1 litre per 585 miles .... luckily up until 2012 I was a service advisor at a BMW main dealer so still know some people and they are going to weigh the oil and document it for me, making a claim if out of spec, my car seems to have been well cared for other than having running in service done 700 miles late, found out today that it has no warranty claims worth noting and all work has been carried out by the original selling dealer.

I will update with the outcome,

Thanks
Steve

Nonsense is a bit harsh.

I've not had 10 but the 3 petrols I've had have burnt oil, 2 heavily. It's not exactly an alien concept for them.
Well it's an alien concept for me having done over 400,000 miles in BMWs, perhaps your cars were not looked after properly before you bought them, didn't run them in well or ragged from cold, remapped etc...

I would be looking for an LCI car at that sort of price. The simplest way to identify them is to look at the idrive controller. The LCI one is bigger and touch sensitive area on the top.

Everyone has different views on options, but I would also recommend that you look out for the Harmon Kardon audio.

Oh .. and mine has used 2 litres of oil in 10,000 miles / 1 year of ownership.

and the adaptive lights are brilliant.

The standard xenon's are also adaptive and they work brilliantly.

I followed the run-in procedure for the most part and, in the first couple of years or so, the car needed a litre every 1000-1200 miles. But during that period I was using it mostly for the very slow commute into London - some days it would be crawling at 20 mph or less for over an hour - occasionally for 2 hours.
But I stopped using it for the commute a couple of years ago and it has only needed a couple of litres in 12.5k miles.

Mine needs a litre every now and then also, I'm in traffic a lot too and had it from new. Every M car I've had from the E39M5 on has had an appetite for oil it's nothing to worry about at all.

Funny that none of mine have used a drop, this includes M5LCI/M6 GC CP, THREE M3's

I put it down to hardly ever using mine as intended my commute is absolutely shocking and has been for years bumper to bumper all the way every bl##dy day. The proliferation of speed cameras where I live doesn't help either.

I've had quite a few M's (E46 M3, E46 CSL, E60 M5 x 2, E92 M3) and now the F10 and they have all used oil.

My next car is going to be a 330e as I've finally admitted defeat. there really is no point in sitting burning fuel (and oil!!)

Yea traffic does nothing for "M" cars, I am selling the M3 CP for a 540i M Sport XDrive next March, I am putting the "M" performance pack on it for a bit more go.

Would have been nice if it was a like a sort of Hemi system where 4 cylinders on the M5 engine shut off in town - either automatically or via a switch

Very much so. I was driving a diesel 320d for work for a month and the fact that I didn't have to refuel at least once a week really swung it for me. I must be getting old!

To counter the recent comments about going more economical I bought my M5 in March after three months of 535DMSport ownership - yes the 535 was fairly rapid for a diesel but not much else to recommend it apart from the 40MPG that I obtained...not sad to see it go. If I was commuting everyday in heavy traffic I certainly wouldnt do it in an M5 though, in fact I wouldnt do it in anything apart from maybe a motorbike.

Over 4000 miles in the past year, I have been averaging 18.5MPG, with best average 20.5MPG and worst 16.5MPG. Calculated off the tank, not the car computer.
