Hi all - dilemma time. Fed up of modern boxes so sold up and going to get back into some old school M magic or indeed air cooled wonder

As always I'm on the hunt for exemplary incarnations and can't decide

The e24 M6 is a rare beast, to me in M6 guise it surely ranks as the most sexy M shape ever... My other candidate is an e30 M3 - This model is surrounded with legend status and is all about the drive

With the above in mind, the M6 seems a better buy at current prices with the M3 seemingly at the top of the financial food chain..

Think there's a stunning low mile Macao M6 at Munich Legends which looks familiar (seen at NEC and car shows, think owner owned a few 6 series?) Anyone know anything about it??

There is a reasonable choice of e30 M3's but one has just scrambled my brain - an M3 Cab at Classic Hero's ?!?
Not considered a convertible but sure looks pretty!!

So there you go - a complete mumble jumble of thought process, but if anyone can offer some advice, or point me towards
a perfect specimen - please do so.

Thanks

Many thanks for that. I thought it possibly was the same car - truly drooling! I made enquiries last week at Munich Legends about it but notice the advert details have been removed from their site. Removed although not showing as sold??

Would you happen to know the owner and if its still for sale??

While I can't help you on this front there's plenty more knowledgeable than I on the bigcoupe website which is a good source of info.

I would recommend speaking to Munich Legends directly or Barney at Classic Heroes ( http://www.classicheroes.co.uk) as they'll be able to give you a wealth of information about either the E24 or E30 and no doubt know of cars not "officially" for sale.

How about an e28 M5?

This may be controversial with some, and it is definitely just a "personal preference" thing, but I couldn't help feeling that that engine suited the character of the 5er better than the 6er. I found you could really hustle the M5 along a nice windy country road, making the engine sing, whereas the M635 just wasn't quite so sharp. The 6er would make a great autobahn stormer, but then I quite liked the standard M30-engined slusher 635csi for that sort of thing.

That said, I still hanker after an M635. And an e30 M3 for that matter! A nice predicament to have... Let us know what you decide.

FWIW I had a good look at the M3 Cab at Classic Heroes when I was dropping my car off a week ago. While stunning as is the M635 at ML I can't help wondering whether they are too nice to actually use.?

E28 is a good shout, difficult to find these days.

Many thanks for info and pointers....

I used to be heavily involved with the BMW scene, at one time owning 1 x black E28 M5, 1 x red E28 M5, 1 x E24 M6 Dolphin highline with only 19k and also a E24 635 Highline. This was at a time when they could be purchased, driven and enjoyed with lesser regard to the finances. 'Sigh' !!

At present an M6 appeals to me (the most pleasing M to the eye and a relaxed driving M classic)
An E30 M escaped me previously and is an itch that needs itching! I appreciate that the M3 cab is possibly not considered
A halo M product, but wow it's a good looking thing...
I'm also starting to think maybe look at a tintop E30 M3 and again the RHD one at Munich Legends looks mighty interesting

Anyway I've made contact with the various vendors and a trip is planed for later in the week .... Watch this space

A nice predicament to be in.

As you are looking for "exemplary incarnations", have you considered this E30 M3. I have not seen the car in the flesh but there can't be many nicer standard E30 M3's out there, it's not cheap though £75,000, but seems to be within in your price bracket.

http://www.pistonheads.com/classifieds/used-cars/b...

Is the car that you are going to buy going to be a daily driver? You say that you have sold your modern car so I am guessing it is to be a daily driver. If so then I would advise against buying the Macau M635. The car is perfect and it would degrade very quickly if daily driven. The underside hasn't got a spec of dirt on it and the immaculate lotus White leather and white carpet would be filthy in no time. The same would also apply to the very low mileage E30 M3 convertible which also has Lotus white leather.

At the end of the day it's your money and you can enjoy both cars as you see fit but you would devalue both cars quite quickly, that would need to be taken into account.

Personally, I would take a tin top E30 M3 over a convertible as I just feel the E30 M3 convertible was more of a marketing gimmick as opposed to an enthusiasts car, the classic heroes car does look stunning though.

If it was my money, I would have that beautiful Macau M635, but I would be afraid to drive it on anything but sunny days.

Good luck and let us know how you get on.

Hi - Indeed, I am just not enjoying modern kit and am going full circle back into 80s and or 90s cars. Specifically an M Power or maybe back
into some air cooled (3.2 or 993)

As with most living this relentless modern life, I don't even find much time to drive my crappy cars let alone the 'special' garaged job!
Whichever model my next car is, it will be for high and dry days only - quite happy to ogle, polish and just enjoy ownership..

Ahhh...Jonny Finance, the penny drops.

I remember your previous collection. A lovely red restored bodykitted E28 M5 and a stunning 19k mile M635. They were for sale in ML in 2006, Barney told me that all the cars came from the same collection. I very nearly bought your M635 for about £23,000 (from memory), but backed out at the last minute as I felt it was too much money at the time, I'm kicking myself now that I didn't buy it as it was absolutely stunning.

If you are looking for something to replicate your old M635 then you wont find better than the Macau Motorsport car that ML currently have, the only thing that has changed is the price.

An E30 M3 is a very very different driving experience to the M635 that you were used to. My advice would be to take an E30 M3 for a spin before making any decisions. The E28 M5 sits somewhere in the middle of the M635 and the E30 M3, on a scale of sporty GT cruiser (M635) and raw driver focused car(E30 M3).

Good luck

Good luck
This.

I bought my first M3 on looks and reputation alone and on the journey home asked myself 'what have I done?' weeping The M25 and a close ratio box didn't show the M3 in a good light but driving to Cornwall the next day, along with a blast along the Atlantic highway, soon changed my opinion. You need the right road and a willingness to rev the s14 to get the best from it. I don't mean to patronise but I have heard a few folk say the M3 was disappointing when it was actually their driving style that was at odds with the car. The M3 begs to be driven hard and that's where the rewards are, as its limits are higher than seems possible.

Hello,

I just thought I'd say hi on this thread because I bought that black on white Classic Heroes E30 M3 convertible.

And I totally understand the OP's dilemma because I just bought this concours M635CSi to compliment it:
https://www.premiumclassics.nl/news/697/49/BMW-M63...

I agree that the Classic Heroes convertible is too nice to use (the Lotus White leather is immaculate and the car has never seen rain - it still has the 30-year-old transit wax on the underside, engine block, brakes, etc.)... but I have two other E30 M3's for actual driving so that's ok. :-)

Cheers,

e21Mark
