M2 Owners - Manual or DCT?
Discussion
Had a test drive in an M2 today and really rather liked it.
Dealer was trying to convince me to jump into one of their cancelled orders (Stephen James Ruxley if anyone looking have a black and white one coming in both cancelled orders) but both were DCT.
When i said i would prefer a manual, he said i was crazy, so wondering what people have bought here?
(And glad i held out as came back to find out about the M2 updates - minor, but still prefer the newer LCI car )

Just ordered a manual. Want to have the engagement of choosing when to change gear, which I suspect most of the drivers who see this car as appealing will also want.
Although I see that a third registered so far are manual, two thirds DCT.
Should help to keep residuals on manual a little stronger based on numbers of cars available.

This is what Chris Harris thinks.

If it were me I would go for a manual.

Unless you are trying to break lap times rather than have fun and engage yourself with the driving experience, I really can't see why anyone would choose an auto. That being said, nearly every journo you hear says the same yet the buying public tend to lean in favour of auto when given the choice so i'm confused. I'm a bit older so grew up with manuals and don't see the point of an auto in a sports car so perhaps they're aimed at younger drivers.

And this is the thing ... the auto was nice and all, but i felt a bit disconnected with it as ive always had fun cars that are manual - integra, 911 turbo, even my old corrado! There is something about changing gears and being in control of the car by myself that makes it more special.Edited by P.Griffin on Friday 12th May 11:36
I get that u can do it with flap paddles etc, but having had them in my 335d a while back, i never really used them and just let the car do the work as thats the point of the auto i figured.

The pedals in the M2 are horribly offset. The gearshift isn't that amazing either.
I'd go for DCT, seems to match the character of the car.
My friend who owns one agrees.
The pedals are not offset, however, the brake pedal on the DCT is like a normal sized brake pedal in a manual car and not like the larger brake pedals found in most other auto gearbox cars. That may be why you think the pedals are offset?I'd go for DCT, seems to match the character of the car.

I agree with you that the DCT matches the car's character as I own an M2 DCT and I can say it's a fantastic gearbox and I have no regrets at all getting a DCT over the manual box even though it would have saved me £2,645. I've owned many manual cars including all previous M3's, apart from the F80 M3, and all my previous M3's were all manual.
I went for DCT. I had it in my M3 and I loved it. Didnt even bother test driving the manual.
In the M3 you can choose the change speed, in the M2 it goes by what mode the car is in. Its not something I miss but on the fastest setting the changes were more brutal in the M3, which was fun. The changes are fast when in Sport on the M2 though. The only other difference I notice is that its slower when changing from reverse to drive in the M2.

Quantify "horribly offset"? Most people wouldn't notice unless some pedantic journo hadn't pointed it out, and for the record, the gear change is absolutely fine. I'm assuming the other 2 pedals in the DCT are equally offset.
I notice it instantly in many cars. I'm not a pedantic journo. Compared to lots of cars, cars the m2 clutch is closer to where the brake pedal is ergo you feel like your feet and legs are going to the right.Same issue on audi a4 etc. Causes me a lot of knee pain.
Id have to have an auto in those models.

Please forgive me if you have a genuine disability but I find this statement a ridiculous over exaggeration. If not I'd consider going to the gym or seeing a physio. Same issue on audi a4 etc. Causes me a lot of knee pain.

What's the gearing like in the manual? I have a manual m140i and the gearing is annoyingly short in 6th. I love the car with the gearbox - just wish 6th was longer. Been wondering about an M2 so keen to know about final drive in 6th compared with auto in top...
Can't help with the gearing on the M2 I'm afraid but how short is short on the manual M140i - roughly how many revs is it pulling at 70mph in top? Gassing Station | M Power | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
