I'm toying with the idea of buying an M2 - probably 'pre-owned' - as a run-around for 9-12 months.

However, few questions:
- I gather there's a minor 'facelift' due - any idea what changes it might have, and when is it due?
- What's the current 'lead time' on a new to spec order?
- If I buy used, my preferences are LB Blue, probably Manual, plus a few 'packs' - any 'must have' options for re-sale?
- Any other useful advice?

thanks

Hi mate,
I have an M2. Options that I have that I really like are: comfort access, reverse camera and lighting pack. I have DCT as it is a daily driver and I like that too but a manual would be my next choice.

The LCI is available now / very soon but the updates are very minor imo - different lights and instrument cluster and maybe newer idrive. The later 2016 cars have idrive 5 which is good.

If it was me I would try and get a good discount of a used one- there are loads appearing now and prices have started to creep down. You will also get chance to use it in the summer!

I really like the car, it's a fantastic thing and you won't regret buying one. i find myself just going out for a drive in the evening for no other reason than it makes me smile, which is great for something so compliant and practicle(ish).

Yes, I'm in a position to buy now, if I find the right car (LBB) at the right price.

However, bit cautious about pricing, as I don't want to get my fingers burnt when I come to sell next year (it's to fill a gap between a GT4 and a GT3).

Sorry to hijack, but...

What do you lose if you get an older car? And when was the changeover?

No problem, I'm equally keen to understand the differences between the early, later and 'facelift' models - if any.

Primarily looking for the best value.

I bought one In March, drove it to Newcastle and back, and then parked it in the garage and haven't used it since. Grey, all the options, 800 miles on the clock, so if you want as close to "as new" as you'll find then let me know.

Great car, but I don't really know why I bought it, I just didn't need another car.

If it was LBB, I'd definitely be interested.

Why do you think you haven't felt the desire to use it more?

And what's the spec?

Only that I came from a 981 Spyder to my M2 and I think it's a great all-rounder, so I doubt you'd be disappointed. My only slight criticism is that the vertical damping can feel a bit choppy on some surfaces, but it's not always apparent. Other than that, it's practical, good looking, well equipped and fun to drive.

I don't think the M2 will depreciate much in the next 12 months despite the LCI - supply is still quite limited.

As for the LCI, there's virtually no difference - as mentioned, lights and dash, there are no mechanical changes, so it wouldn't stop me buying a pre-LCI if one was sitting in a showroom at a slight discount.

What's LBB? : Edited to say, I just realised that it's the colour. Sorry, mine's grey.

I'm trying to think which options it doesn't have. I didn't go for the automatic locking, as I'd constantly worry about if it had locked or not, but it has everything else selected.

I only ever drive at weekends, and it's probably one weekend in three, and I've an Audi R8, a BMW R1200GS and a scooter sitting next to it, so it's not often the first choice.

Every time I drive it I enjoy it, a lot, but I just don't need two cars.

Is that the case though? There seem to be regular posts about cancelled orders on the various forums and my local dealer (Stratstone Harrogate) had a new one sitting as stock in the showroom when I took my car in for service at the weekend. Therefore, while I'm certainly not saying M2's are thick on the ground, I don't think they're anywhere near as difficult to get hold of as they were 12 months ago and if dealers have new cars in stock I suspect the lead time on a factory order probably isn't more than around 3 months?

There are also several dozen used cars on the BMW website - and no doubt quite a few more at independent specialists - so I'm not sure supply is still that limited (new or used). I would however concede there are a lot more M4's available so I guess it depends on your definition of limited supply!

I agree.I'm a long term owner but it was put to me by one of the larger dealer networks that were I tempted by a new one he could find me a physical car in 'any colour or any spec you want'..

I think it depends on the dealers - my local one has still got a waiting list, but some dealers may well have them sitting in the showroom; perhaps they do bigger volumes and get a few extra cars.

As gunner said a couple of posts back, I suspect you can now get hold of an M2 quite quickly if you really want one; possibly more of a delay if you choose to restrict yourself to a local dealer (depending on who it is) but it's very easy to shop around nowadays and hence I think a determined buyer could probably get hold of the car they want within a reasonable timescale.

I agree with you, but it doesn't alter the fact that compared to, say, an M3 or M4, supply is somewhat limited which probably has an effect on residuals. The same dealer that told me there was a 12 month waiting list for an M2 always has a new M3 or M4 sitting in the showroom.

I have an M2 and love it. My local dealer quoted 12-18 months wait so I phoned around and obtained one within 2 weeks. The cars are out there but it seems strange, I contacted the dealer, bought their pre-specced incoming car and 2 weeks later collected it. Yet they still had customers waiting a further 6 months for their cars. A strange setup and I would not be too happy if I was the person still waiting 6 months down the line.

As to spec? It comes quite well trimmed as standard - the thing it miss is the sunroof but that is personal. Most of the other stuff is on my car - what do I use most? Sports exhaust probably. Carplay seems shyate, the adaptive headlights are great. Oh maybe through loading system to fold the rear seats - handy for those trips to the dump!

My advice would be see the LBB in the flesh in several light conditions - it can look lovely in the photos yet hideous in the flesh.

I really agree with this too and I parked next to one in LBB and I loved the colour in magazines/photo's, in the metal it looks a vile colour and I was pretty gutted because Blue is usually my favourite colour.

LBB is a great colour in photos and in sunlight but it's very similar to Valencia Orange in it's chameleon like ability to change.

Stick LBB and VO in unfavourable lighting and they transform into dull lifeless colours. LBB a turgid kind of turquoise and VO a brown bronze colour.

Both of these colours are however the launch colours for the car, popular and unique to M (at the time of launch).

All IMHO of course. Which is why I went black for my 1M and white for the M135i.

If I end up with an M2, it will be white, black or grey. Difficult to decide between those three.

Interesting comments RE the LBB colour. That's the one I was set on getting but I've still not seen any M2s in it - just a couple of X6s. Seen a fair few in mineral grey though - but there's barely any up for sale.

I've vowed to never get a black car again and I don't think white works on the M2 so I've ruled those out.
