I lost 30k on my 997.2 C2S over 3 years and 50k miles, if you drive a car you tend to lose money no matter what the badge on the front is.

Blimey. I suppose it depends how new you buy. My 997.2 C2S was six years old - kept it for 18 months - with 55K miles on the clock & lost £2K, the 981 Spyder from new gave me a years free motoring & + £5K. Only had the 997.1 turbo less than six months - but would hope to break even if I keep the car at least 12 months.
Recently sold my 997.2 Turbo S after nearly 4 yrears. Only lost 6k, and that was buying retail and selling trade. Only time I've never made a significant loss on a car. Back in an M5 now, previously E39's and E60, now F10 comp pack, fabulous car, six months old and 4k miles, but I absolutely know I am going to take a pasting when it comes to selling in 2-3 years

Just to add some balance to this Porsche do not lose money love in...

Bought 997 GT3 Gen 1 Brand New December 2007 - cost £89k On the road

Sold it mid 2010 18k miles later for....

£58k

that was a £31k loss in 18k miles.

Worth every penny.

The fact that the same car is now back at retail money is just the bizarre Porsche market we are currently in and should definitely not be used as a bench mark of future values.

I was very happy going in to buy my GT3 thinking every mile is gonna cost me £2 - and I was very happy I bought it.

I have bought M cars since 2004 and accept BMW pricing policy means heavy initial depreciation irrespective of the model. Remember the E46 CSL?
However buying a pre registered car at the right time means at least a 10K saving which after keeping the car for 3/4 years is bearable
financially. My present M3 comp also happens to be quite good!
Experience of OPC is that run of the mill 991's don't hold value that well and the spread between retail/trade is shocking. Why models like the 997GTS are priced north of £70K is difficult to grasp.

Not so much a love in, more a feeling of shock and surprise not to lose a boatload of money when selling a car! To be honest, I think Porsche are very overpriced and I agree the market for them is completely bizarre. And though in many ways I really enjoyed having one (not least when it came to move on), I doubt I would have another.

Very few cars do not loose shed loads of money, BMW loose a lot due to discounting, but they are made cheaper than they like to admit.
The new M5 will have a silly high price tag, but next year will be discounted and RV will be low. IMO.
Be honest who pays list prices these days?.

Buy any newish M or AMG and you are in for a depreciation shock...
If you ahve to have somethign that new I would definitey lease..good deals come up - if you can be flexible on when. C63s where at 550 per month a few weeks ago.....

I just bought a 3 year old M5 for 30k with 30k miles on it. Its like new inside and out. I think it will be worth 5k less as a trade in next year...which will make it

a. a great buy for its next owner
b. something i keep another year.

enjoy whatever you do
