Hi, I'm looking for a new daily driver to replace my 3 month old Focus RS. I just can't find a comfortable driving position in the latter and have decided it's not for me.

I tried an M2 today with the dual-clutch transmission and thought it was terrific - comfortable, decent ride, great steering, and decent performance. It also felt a lot more 'grown up' than the Ford.

I very nearly made am impulse purchase today of a well specced, brand new M2 that is available immediately but am have decided to sleep on it for a few days. I am now in something of a dilemma as much as I loved the M2 I am concerned about over supply and the imminent arrival of the LCI. I will take a 'haircut' if I p/x the RS now, don't want the hassle of a private sale, and don't want to jump onto the M2 and find its immediately obsolete.

So do I order a new car, wait for a build slot, and stay in the RS until the M2 arrives, or take the plunge now and buy the current spec M2?

Your situation mirrors my own exactly.

I bought a focus rs last year on a whim and as abit of a weekend toy, I drive a Range Rover daily and wanted something abit more involved. Having been spoilt with my car history I was disappointed with the focus rs and consequently have only done a couple of k in it, manual in London isn't any fun at all, and I m tall so the seat is an annoyance .

Few weeks ago I started thinking about an m2, having own nearly 10 m3s and 5s over the last decade or so.

Thinking soon turned into buying and I have a well specced 2016 m2 Dct with carbon kit arriving Monday with any luck .

You only live once, if you can afford it just get the deal done! I wouldn't buy new however as the residuals are shocking on all M cars.

I m unsure what the lci changes to the car are but I don't think they are earth shattering.

Thanks for the message. I was hoping the M2 would have better residuals than average but who knows? I bought the RS originally to replace my E63AMG which goes back next week so I know all about crippling depreciation! I thought the RS would be a good alternative and much less expensive to run, but its just not cutting it. I've never had a BMW but fancy a change from the Mercs and Audis etc. The M3/4 just doesn't appeal for some reason, despite the deals on offer.

I am very fortunate in having use of a number of cars so the RS/M2 is really just my 'station car'. I need something that I can do a decent run in if I need to, is welcoming after a long day at work, and is a bit of fun.

Have not seen any decent used M2s about but will have a more serious look now.

There is a M2 CS in the pipeline, next year, it will be using the F8* engine with about 405BHP, so if you can wait it would be a good idea, however I have the 2017 M3 CP and TBH it is a real tool, I too am interested in an M2 but not yet , I am waiting till it's updated with new interior and more power.

Be careful on residuals. I've just been offered £40k on a PX by Porsche. My grey car has everything except sunroof and Bluetooth exhaust (all carbon too).

6100 miles. And I paid over list which was £55.

Why does that sound so bad considering 10k was tax and you paid over list?

I'm not understanding the values of the M2. The demand has gone and dealers were forced to register cars. They are still trying to suggest they can get list prices for pre-registered cars even with updates coming. There should be far better discounts than dealers are holding out for.

The M2 is a far better car than the RS.

Trouble is a well specced car is @ £51K without discount, if you take the Tax off yours £40K is all to expect IMO on cars one year or less old.

I think the dealers are just trying to 'cash' in on the hype surrounding the car, maybe BMW are pushing them hard on cost price .

If people don't buy then the price will have to come down if they want to sell stock. When the 'facelift' car comes out that will further affect residuals . There are plenty of cars available and so it's down to the buyer to work the dealer hard and if they won't discount or budge then move on.

I've not found a deal, albeit have not tried too hard yet. Probably does not help that I need to P/x the RS and values of those are nose diving. Also not looking for Gina either hwich ma not help either.

My local dealer could not offer any clarity on timing to get a new build slot, so this seems like a real shot in the dark.

I do think the M2 is a better car than the RS, or at least better for me

Not sure if it helps, but this was a thread I read on M3 site about a guy selling a new RS. Might give you some idea, or prices, dealers he used?

Values have dropped a lot in recent times. There is too many up for sale.

£30.5k is a strong price considering dealers are selling for thousands less than that. I've heard of people getting poor offers from dealers.

I just ordered an LC1 for delivery in September.

Small discount.

One thing I learnt: Using my existing car as a trade in, they were more interested in how much tread was on the tyres than the spec. So unless you actually like the accessories you're ordering and plan to use them, you will never get that money back (unless you sell privately).

The only thing that stopped an M2 purchase for me was the engine - it's just not up to M car standards in my opinion. Even the M240i runs it close in terms of outright pace.
