By gad, chaps. I just endeavoured to post in the original misheard lyrics thread and the message came back,' You don't have permission to post in this thread.'

Well, perhaps this isn't a reasonable use of my time and resources, but I'm going to do it anyway..

The Belle Stars song 'This is a sign of the times' (1982) said,

"This is the sign of the times
Piece of more to come
This is the sign of the times
Time to be alone."

This always made me wonder what a piece of marzipan had to do with it.

In the same year, along came Musical Youth with 'Pass the dutchie'.

Why was that boy asking us to, "Pass the dogst 'pon the left hand side"?

I'm not sure you've really got the hang of this. They do sing 'Piece of more to come', It means this is a piece, with more of it to follow.

MY did sing about passing the Dutchie, it's a joint.

Who's Sue Lawley?

Have you informed the police of her disappearance?
Or is this a sting operation?

I thought it was a metal cooking pot.

Another favourite is Desmond Dekket and "me ears are alight". Or even Johnny Nash who could see clearly that Lorraine had come.

Maybe you could explain? I don't see how they are misheard lyrics and where Marzipan comes into it?

Thank you wink

Of course I've got the hang of this..

here are the Belle Stars https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UOKJfQpbsL0

Listen to the first run through of the chorus, at 30 secs or so. Then tell me it doesn't sound like she's
singing 'piece of marzipan'.

Here are Musical Youth. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dFtLONl4cNc

Listen to any example of the chorus - and tell me it doesn't sound like he sings
'Pass the dogst 'pon the left hand side'.

Just in case the swear filter's causing confusion, it's pass the 'dog' + (Sierra Hotel India Tango).

Happy now?

The defence rests judge

By the way, I recall Peter Powell (IIRC) explaining that a dutchie is a cooking pot, bowl or some similar utensil.
I suspect this was the Beeb attempting to deny a dutchie might be thought of as a joint, spliff, reefer, bomb, bomber, stick,
blunt, zol or bifter.

I am mildly offended by Billy Ocean’s ‘When the Going Gets Tough’ as he seems to be singing ‘go and get stuffed…’

KD Lang’s ‘Constant Craving’ is ruined for me as I keep hearing ‘can’t stand gravy…’

In the chorus to Macy Gray’s ‘I Try’ (especially towards the end of the track, when she is getting a bit excited) she seems to be singing ‘I blow bubbles when you are not here’.

Temple of Love - Sister of Mercy

Original verse is:

In the black sky thunder sweeping
Underground and over water
Sounds of crying weeping will not save
Your faith for bricks and dreams for mortar
All your prayers must seem as nothing
Ninety-six below the wave
When stone is dust and only air remains

I still hear the 4th line, when it's sung, as:
Your faith for bricks and Reeves and Mortimer

Your original post came across like you'd just got in from an all day session, anyhow; Diana Ross clearly sings "Tell Eddie Waring there ain't no salvation" in the rather suggestive 'Chain Reaction'.

I have a new one, but it evades me right now, i'll be back when it's played again....

It was news to a work colleague recently (who is 38 btw), that Beastie Boys were not singing about sleeping at beditime

My colleague thought the song went "No. Sleep. Till bedtime...."

Instead of the better known version that goes "No.Sleep. Till Brooklyn..."

"No sleep till bedtime" was by Wierd Al Yankowicz I think.
ETA..no, it was in Stutter Rap by Morris Minor and the Majors

And IIRC the MY original lyric was "pass the coochie(sp?)"(a joint) and was replaced by "dutchie"(a pot" as it was felt not right for kids to be singing about drugs.
I may have missed remembered though.
