So the gift that keeps on giving- gave some more today.

It’s a bit hot in the sun, and yes I’d expect the car to be a bit hit and bothered - the M5 engine is a bit like a Disney’s genie right? “Phenominal Cosmic Powers - itty bitty living space “

Anyhoo... literally at the bottom of my road after being on the MWay for 1.5hrs. I Start slowing for the roundabout and the car stalls instantly - I’m pretty sure it died before I dipped the clutch, the first I knew about it was when the steering went rock solid. ( note to self: eat more spinach)

So I’ve had a google and it’s either a dirty ICV or a shaggerdoodled fuel pump relay.

I’ll do both and never know which one it was. It’s not a situation I want to have repeat when I’m being a bit more spirited approaching a tightening radius with a ditch between the road and field.

Happy (?) motoring!

Not read it all way through but do you still have MAF's in place?

I do indeed still have my MAF’s

Should I clean them or is the way to go to delete them?

There is little doubt they will cause problems

You can replace with vag parts for a lot less or tune then out.

Mine had robbed over 40bhp....

Just had a read through the whole thread, makes me miss my old M5, didn't want to sell it but needs must and it had to go;

It's not all bad news though, I still have a 540i in a particularly nice colour;

I’ll add them to the list. !!
Found some videos with Bosch part numbers and it looks like an easy enough job so I’ll give that a go.

The reason I tuned mine out was as the car is a keeper (owned 6 years, just being restored) I figured they will fail again (They fail so gradually you don't notice!)

Good luck with the car, I've only ever seen one green before somewhere over Oxfordshire, it's a nice colour!

It's a bit difficult to compare them as the 540 is an auto so it has more of a wafty GT cruiser feel rather than the more focused, driver orientated feel of the M5, that said though, there's very little difference in the comfort and handling, the M5 felt a bit more planted due to having an LSD, the steering is on the M5 is tighter and more direct. Performance wise, the gap isn't as big as you might expect, the M5 is considerably quicker off the line and at low speeds, but the in gear acceleration from about 40 mph and up on the 540 is very strong, it wouldn't quite keep up with the M5 but the M5 wouldn't be able to leave it behind if that makes sense.
The biggest difference between the two is that while the 540 is a very, very good car it doesn't have that 'something' that the M5 has, it drives really well but I don't get the same feeling when I drive it that I got from the M5.

would agree, 540 probably very similar in initial performance, but at track / licence losing speeds the M5 will pull away... M5 feels much sharper to drive...

Wow its been a long time since I shared anything about the big green beastie...

So... Mileage has gone up... now at 235k miles so we've hit the moon and we're on our way back.

The headlights have gone completely now, they're so steamy that Steven King has been on the phone asking to borrow them as a back drop for a shower murder scene he's working into a movie.
SO I have sourced a pair of face lift OE units and found some harnesses online to deal with the wiring and they'll be going in over this mad period of isolation.
My DBS Amp has also given up the ghost... another one to sort out while Im sat at home, hopefully the fixers are still working a skeleton crew so I can get some tunes for when this all over and i hit the road again.

headlights if fogged up on the plastic is very easy to resolve. Do mine once a year, the kits from maguiars helps.

Just sand back, then when completely fogged over apply lacquer and voila

Ah, I sometimes get this but less so recently it appears (since car was restored) I presume the reseating of the lamps got the little vent holes clearing

Go on to Youtbue. search for legitstreetcars. Guy called Alex had a 350K M5. Went through the mechanicals, issues, etc. Worth a view.

Once a year? Is that not a bit often to be needing it again?

Its not quite once a year but it depends on where the car's been used, stored, weather, quality of last application.
