Cheers peeps

How can you be certain a car is a competition pack? I understand they have dark chrome exhaust tips, but that’s only relative if next to a normal one.
The exhaust tips are matt black chrome, non-comp are normal chrome, as far as I can recall that's the only visible difference
From the brochure:

  • Exhaust tips are black chrome (shiny chrome, not matt - sorry jm doc teacher )
  • Suspension lowered by 10mm
  • The wheels are the 601 style
(I know wheels can be easily changed and therefore this isn't usually a good indicator of a car's model/spec, however I don't think the 601 wheels were option-able separately from the comp package, and in any case they're not as nice as the std wheels so doubt anyone would do this biggrin )

Well mine looked matt black to me!
And I loved the wheels...

Might be useful to be more specific about what spec you're after.

Also, tell us about your last car - I take it it was positive experience if you're buying another one hehe

Hi,
I had my last M6 gran coupe for 18 months, it was just used at weekends and it’s the best car I’ve had.
After looking in the market for a replacement car for a while, I feel as though nothing comes close to the M6 gran coupe price range so am heading that way again.
I was tempted by an Audi RS6, but I rather stick to a BMW.
I had to sell the car as I was buying a car for the wife.
Ideally colour preference would be either San Marino Blue ,black or a Singapore Grey.
Would consider other colours for the right price except for the Silverstone blue.
In reference to the spec am not too fussed as I feel as though, it’s more about the drive on the M6, my previous M6 was pretty basic with no extras, and I was still really happy with the drive etc.
Was looking to upgrade to the new M5, but I have other priorities at this moment.
Hopefully in the near future will upgrade to the M5 in 2-3 years.
I had a really good experience with the M6, and I was really pleased with the handling of the car, considering the power and rear wheel drive.
If anybody is looking to sell anytime soon, you can drop an email to mobilemartuk@yahoo.com

Well this seems to be the font of knowledge on M6 GC, so I figured I’d add my experience to the mix.

We bought ours six weeks ago. Sapphire black with champagne upgrade leather, piano black dash. Lots of extras with a couple of random omissions. Stuff like soft close doors but bottom of the range stereo. A steal at £27k for a 55k mile 13 reg from main dealer with warranty, given it was over £100k new. And in my opinion, the best looking modern BMW by quite some margin.

Blown away by it on the very first trip. So easy to pootle around in the city with everything wound back. Gearbox a little jerky with stop start but otherwise a pussycat. On the motorway, just mind bending effortless performance. Same hp as our Diablo and far more subtle in deploying it but on a warm summer evening, almost felt like it was tearing up the tarmac below. Then onto Welsh A-roads, where it handled far better than its two tonne weight would suggest. Fantastic paddle box vs my old CSL SMG too. Amazing, great fun, proper M car without a doubt.

And, er, that’s where the good news stops. The very day we bought it, about 150 miles into ownership. Just as we were pulling into our hotel for the night, dashboard lit up with ‘drivetrain problem’, it went into limp mode and started misfiring. Pulled up and opened the door to be greeted with strong smell of petrol. Family and stuff out in record time. Roadside assistance were amazing, to their credit and they had it picked up and rental 4GC organised in under 30 mins, leaving only a puddle of petrol behind. Amazed it didn’t catch fire, maybe the hot vee helped.

And that was the last time we saw it. Dealer it was recovered to, Halliwell Jones, were great. They quickly worked out that not only had two injectors failed but that they’d been installed wrong, without seals, and that in an effort to fit a replacement fuel rail, someone had drilled and tapped the head (!!!).

Warranty company rejected the repair claim (guts of new fuel system and a cylinder head plus bore inspection) as due to pre-existing fault. Fair enough. So we left it to HJ to negotiate with selling dealer about how they’d pay for repair.

While we waited, HJ dug into the history a bit, where things got very grotty. Eight previous owners not three as implied by selling dealer. Extensive warranty work not a couple of window regulators as suggested by selling dealer.

Turns out it had a new engine at 22k (rod bearings judging by brief description) then about four years of near constant fuel system work and something like five sets of spark plugs.

Meanwhile selling dealer just went completely quiet with myself and the dealer it was sat at, still partially disassembled. So after another couple weeks of silence, we had no choice but to reject it. A week or so later they accepted that, and we got the cash back plus costs this week.

Absolutely gutted that it went so badly wrong. Roadside assistance and Halliwell Jones were fantastic to deal with, main dealer I bought it from an incompetent joke. At least they didn’t put up a fight on the rejection. Mixed feelings on the car, think I’ll maybe try something from ingolstadt next.

Oh, and finally, if you see LO13 XGG for sale, for the love of god don’t buy it 😀. Attached is the only photo I have 😞

Well they appear to have fixed it.

And increased the price for good measure. Is this the same location you got it from?

Ha, last I heard the dealer still hadn’t picked it up from HJ in Chester. Part of our thinking in rejecting was that the dealer being on the hook for costs meant they’d more than likely want to do a cheaper fix that what was advised by HJ, leaving an easy out for the warranty company on any future problems long after consumer right of rejection had faded. I should imagine new cylinder heads don’t come cheap. And given how bad the leak was, I’d want to be able to trust that a bore inspection was satisfactory. They also failed to spot loose brake pads in the AUC inspection before any of this happened. Something that the MOT guy spotted on the morning of collection. Mistakes can be made but my faith in their technicians was close to zero, so best to reject and move on. Now I need to start a new ‘what ///M / barge / starship car’ thread!

Wow, that really is terrible to hear, thank god no one was hurt.

It amazes me that the dealer was so coy about such fundamental details such as previous owners (verifiable via V5 anyway) and service history; simply cannot believe that the car is now up for sale again so swiftly - shocking.

I absolutely love my M6 (albeit, cabrio not GC) but I would feel differently if it suffered such a large issue such as yours, I think you were right to walk away and start again. Perhaps another M6 GC?

I suspect the lack of detail was ignorance more than malice. It wasn’t them who had worked on it the last four years. But yes, still pretty shoddy.

terrible experience and glad you all got out OK.

Don't let it put you off if you were so enamored with it up to the point of berakdown, after all it wasn't the cars fault just some tt who bodged it up.

I'm coming up 3 years daily use of mine and I agree with all the earlier points of your post. Mine is same black Sapphire but with red leather, soft close ventilated seats, collision avoidance lane change etc etc and loads of other high end extras that make it feel an event to get in and drive. As for looks take another peak, the 850 is a massive step backwards in that dept.

Yep! In retrospect kind of amazed they’re selling 7yo cars approved used. Rare to see any high performance Audis and mercs at main dealer at that age. At least that meant the recovery backup was decent :-)

Thanks for info thumbup

I'm possibly in the market for an M6GC, so I read your story with great interest. I had (so far) focussed my search purely on BMW approved used models for the security of purchase, but it seems my faith was severely misplaced!

What/who was the warranty company that rejected the claim? (I thought approved used came with a warranty from BMW themselves?)

Yep BMW itself sort of but AU warranty is actually insured product. I think by Allianz. No complaints they refused it. Was clearly pre-existing and that’s why consumer rights buying from trade are so strong in early days.

Interesting to know that your 30 day right to reject effectively pauses while car is in workshop so we were still on day one when we rejected!

I’d say my experience made me more likely to go down the approved route. Just not from one dealer in particular that shall not be named and shamed.

I think BMW have become too mass market and although hopefully not an everyday story the above demonstrates Approved Used is not as fail safe as it once might have been. I bought mine from an independent dealer it was about £3K cheaper than main dealer prices and I got at least £2k more for my PX.

OK his 12 month warranty didn't stack up but I was able to buy the Mondiale BMW warranty anyway and while it cost a few hundred pounds extra for the first year as it was out of warranty when I got it, the price dropped on renewal year two. The car was beautifully prepped and it had very recently been through end of warranty appraisal at Sytner and for example had everything done (brand new wheels included). The dealer has sold plenty of these and generally trades high end stuff so could probably find you a nice one too?.

I have no connection just a satisfied customer of FTC Leasing Amersham.

I would say the exact opposite in that the Approved Used car was fully refunded without any fuss once the car was identified as a pup?
