It’s tricky isn’t it? On the refund they didn’t have any choice and the ‘do you know what nemesis means’ letter we sent made that v clear, though I’ve heard dealers often fight it as they’ve not much to lose at that point. I was grateful for the high touch roadside assistance and courtesy car, so a cheaper warranty wouldn’t have cut it, but yep can always spend a chunk of savings from non main dealer purchase on buying the bmw warranty where that’s possible. In terms of bmw being mass market - personally think it was more the large parent company of that particular dealer than bmw itself. Halliwell Jones were very very good to deal with in contrast - open, honest, helpful and actually answered their phones. Big thumbs up on that at least.

I would say the exact opposite in that the Approved Used car was fully refunded without any fuss once the car was identified as a pup?
Aren’t you forgetting that it was sold as a pup to our friend here as an approved used car in the first place. It clearly wasn’t checked and should never have left the premises with petrol leaks and brake pads hanging outrolleyes

We’re sorry your family’s dead but you can have your money back no problem for f*cks sake

I think BMW have become too mass market and although hopefully not an everyday story the above demonstrates Approved Used is not as fail safe as it once might have been. I bought mine from an independent dealer it was about £3K cheaper than main dealer prices and I got at least £2k more for my PX.

OK his 12 month warranty didn't stack up but I was able to buy the Mondiale BMW warranty anyway and while it cost a few hundred pounds extra for the first year as it was out of warranty when I got it, the price dropped on renewal year two. The car was beautifully prepped and it had very recently been through end of warranty appraisal at Sytner and for example had everything done (brand new wheels included). The dealer has sold plenty of these and generally trades high end stuff so could probably find you a nice one too?.

I have no connection just a satisfied customer of FTC Leasing Amersham.

It wasn't refunded because it was Approved Used, it was rejected under the 2015 Consumer Rights Act which allows you to reject any car within 30 days if unfit.

Sadly I had a similar horrendous experience from a major BMW dealer selling a 12 month old F10 M5 that had only done 3k miles and was an absolute wreck. In this case though, they knew exactly what they were doing and what they were selling, and the car had already been rejected a few weeks earlier by another customer.

Despite this, I still went and bought another BMW AU M5, but not from them! It's a difficult habit to break after over 20 years of M cars.

You have been warned, Main dealer or not, there are some seriously dodgy car dealers out there.

The one I was sold was worse than that, given that it was a year old with 3k miles, just unbelievable what some people will do.

I’m guessing a couple of the 8 former owners on mine also rejected. Now 9 former...

Yes, that's a good point.
Often when you get a situation like that, you get the two parties blaming each other, and lengthy dispute about responsibility/liability ensures, in the meantime the poor customer is left high & dry without a car.

That's a kind offer - cheers.

I'm pretty fussy about the spec I'm wanting, and I'm in the (un?) fortunate position of not living particularly close to any BMW dealer. The upside of this being that it effectively opens up the entire BMW approved network to me, as all major cities are equally tricky to get to, so it doesn't really matter which dealership the right car turns up at (although I could do with knowing which dealer AbeFroman bought from so I can avoid them ears )

The downside is that I'll likely be buying the car unseen, which is why I was sticking to Approved Used on the basis that their cars will be cleaner with no murky histories, but it's clear that this belief was unfounded.

I know these cars now have their service records digitally stored on the cars' memory (or on the key), but does this include repairs items or is it purlely services?
Any way of obtaining the repair/maintenence history?

Yep just service history on the key but any dealer can print out list of warranty work. Need to be on individual dealer system to read the details so Sytner would have no visibility into Stratstone for example but there would be a headline on everything on the combined system and armed with that you could call dealers for more details.

Sytner had a m5 i was interested in, noticed the running in service had been done late at 4500 miles, and their response - that'll be an error, we can fix that. Dont worry about it.

AUC is worth it for the warranty but eyes wide open and all that.

A register of known dodgy cars would be a useful addition to car forums..

Being fairly new to M6 ownership, I wanted to understand the preferred servicing approach.

Are people still using BMW main dealers or has anyone reverted to using specialists yet? Mine is full BMWSH so would intend to keep it that way, but wondered if anyone had reverted to independent.

sticking with Sytner for the main service work but as and when brake pads and discs need doing I will use a specialist making sure genuine parts are used to maintain the insured warranty

Wow shocking story.

Stratstone Derby have awful reviews on AutoTrader.

And thank god you posted this as I could see myself looking at it (although 9 previous owners would have stopped me)

Don't be put off, I wasn't! Just don't be too trusting because they are supposed to be main dealers. Some of them are dodgier than any backstreet dealer. Happy to name and shame but I don't think PH would be happy if I did, sadly.

Question for owners:
What’s an average range for these cars with a full tank (for, say, a big cross country drive with no city driving involved?)

Also, how good is the ride on softest settings?

(Part of the appeal for me is, I hope, the duality of sporty/fun to drive but also able to swallow big journeys with ease & real comfort)

This is for an F10 M5 LCI, so same mechanicals: 80 litre fuel tank is already a good start, and worst case consumption I had with very fast autobahn driving was 14 litres/100 km, meaning a range of 570 km. If you drive in the UK with normal speeds, I suspect you would easily be at 650 km range.

Ride in Comfort and 20" was more than acceptable, not flying carpet by no means but correct for the horsepower and type of vehicle.

Response for an M6 GC Comp pack:

If I am on a long journey involving motorway / cross country driving and making decent progress, computer will give me a range between 450 and 480 miles. Usually results in me re-fuelling at around 425 miles.

I find the ride really good but it depends on your own personal experiences and what you’re comparing against. Our other cars at present are a TTS and Mini JCW and the M6 is the most comfortable ride of the three (and they are all on Michelin’s).
