Have you ever seen an E28 M5 in real life?

1,430kg listed in the handbook.
Lighter than an E46 M3 and not much less power.

You two have missed the point myself and Steve Rance have made that in my (and I assume Steves) opinion is that fast big saloon can become boring when the novelty of straight line speed wares off.

I didn't compare an E30 M3 and CSL to an M5 as I know full well (having owned M5's) that they are not comparable, I just backed up my view of enjoying something with less straight line go but better 'feel'.
Why even mention them then? The thread is about a 2 tonne AWD M5, do you think the potential owner is looking for a lightweight road racer? Seriously.....

The "novelty" is in the eye of the beholder, you do realise that other people own fast cars as well and perhaps have different needs and wants to you?

Why does every M thread have to be infected with this nonsense about the features/character of another M car that isn't remotely comparable to the car being discussed.

I loved my e46 M3 and my 911 but what has that got to do with the new M5?

I was agreeing with someone else's view and quantifying it. Get over it,

He does have a habit of throwing his toys out of the park very child like.

Best ignore him sometimes.

As it's their first awd M car I think we should reserve judgement it's switchable to RWD
BMW will probably do a good job of making such a big car handle well, they always do. I just can't help but think that no matter how good it is, it would be even better without the weight penalty of the AWD.
They have to move where the consumers is, RS6 then Merc E63 and of course Tesla, headline numbers sell cars, they know this.

No one complained about the current RS6 everyone raves about them, the new e63s gets lauded on PH too, as does the Tesla to some extent at least for it's sheer grunt off the line, BMW move to compete and people complain.

I've been driving M cars for nearly 15 years and I don't think I've ever seen one launched that people didn't complain about.

This, absolutely, and I've been driving them almost 20 years. I remember the moaners out in force about the V10 in the E60! Now they are all saying it's the best ever n/a engine.
You've got to laugh at them sometimes, but they aren't half boring at times.

Don't think anyone ever moaned about the V10 itself to be fair.

Really? Top gear test driving it normally starting up the comment wasit was as flattery as a TdI BUT then you find the M button and all is forgiven.

Also the tiny fuel tank plus terrible mpg was also flagged - though it’s no worse than the C6 RS6

Not really moaning about the engine then, is it?

Honestly it's true, people really did moan about the engine not being a V8, no bottom end, and how it wasn't true to it's heritage or some such waffle. I'm not sure if it's the same ones currently moaning on here, but the sound is the same!! blabla

I've said this several times before, but the F10 M5 was far from only being a straight line demon, on track it could hang with the big dogs all day long.

Now whilst I couldn't stay out as long driving at 9/10ths as the GT3's, i could certainly lap very close to as quick & that was on a damp Spa circuit with temps only just above zero. I was able to post a 3:01 when the 991 GT3's were only just able to hit 3:00, so like for like they were lapping within a second.

My M5 had no handling enhancements other than H&R Sports Springs & it was on standard steel discs but with Pagid RS29's. The greatly improved pads probably gave me 3secs per lap.

I suspect it was nobody of note because any journalist reviews were waxing lyrical about a V10 with upwards of 8000rpm in a saloon car.

I recall Autocar reviewing it in a joint test against a F430..and the M5 was quicker.

So this thread has been completely derailed by talks about the F10 and E60 M5, and air cooled seats in the F10 now?

Is performance comparisons between the M5 cars not permitted? Seems highly relevant IMHO

Christ, a post that I can actually agree with. Hell has indeed frozen over today (it's cold enough...) hehe

Well I am sure there must be some people of note on here as well, but I don't think they were the ones moaning about how a V10 betrayed the M car heritage...

Sooo it makes no difference...

Assuming the Merc has a good years worth of miles under its belt being a 17, wonder if that’s enough to make the difference?

Not sure if it makes any difference but the E63 S 2014 v the F10 CP nothing in it at the 1/4.
