I've never understood this mind set, the M5 was always the heaviest and best equipped 5 series with more power than you needed nothing has changed in terms of that positioning.

M cars have never been cheap and moderately powerful it's not what the customers want.

I agree with this but it's the size that bothers me, I had a loan G30 when my F10 was in for a service and it was absolutely enormous! I know BMW have to do it to cater for the Chinese market particularly but personally I think it's too big for anything other than Mways. To be fair all cars are going the same way.
M5 was the original autobahn stormer so again nothing has changed in terms of its remit, what has changed are regulations dictating that they do everything they can to protect the occupants in the event of crash that's why the doors are like those on a vault and the cars wings so tall and broad shouldered.

I actually think the new one appears smaller than the F10 even thought it's not.

I had an e60 a few years ago, which felt like a bit of a bus.

The only F10 I have driven is my current M5. Although it's a big car, it really shrinks around you.

You can't deny it feels weighty, but the abundance of power, quick steering and high levels of front end grip mean that it is very chuckable. To me it feels like a dialled up version of my old 335i.

There are issues with traction under hard acceleration, which I dont really mind as I feel it adds character.

I was intitally worried about the move to 4wd, but all the reviews I have seen are so positive, I am really looking forward to a drive in the new one.

The F10 M5 is monster and I agree with your comments, another one of those M cars that some people will only appreciate later in it's life cycle, which often the case with most M cars.

I'd love a go in the new one but it's too rich for my pocket these days.

That is ludicrously fast for a saloon car!

BMW finally went 4WD with the M5 and ALL of them will be automatic, well at least for the first ones on sale...no manual option. Not only is it automatic but is an 8 speed torque converter. I suppose it adds to the incredible off the line performance.

At least they have added a 2WD mode - if you do want to hoon it sideways.

I still dont like that they have a 4.4L V8 and yet NEED to add digital added noise to the engine like the previous version. Still...an amazing car.

As I understand it that torque converter locks up as soon as it moves off so no power losses

I completely agree, monster is a very good way to describe them. Unbelievable machines, like “Angela Merkel screaming..” that’s what my friend said when we were hurtling towards the horizon....

They're stunning performance figures, I also really like how you can switch it to RWD, so you can have grip or silly fun whenever you want it.

My F10 was fast enough for me and I nearly came a cropper once or twice with the speed police (only got caught once which amazed my wife TBH!)

I would suggest if you have one and enjoy mashing the pedal there’s a danger you’ll be in the klink faster than you can say 0-60 in 2.8 seconds hehe

Imagine IF BMW did offer this as a Touring too... what a lovely option that would be and a fantastic choice for the customer E63 S RS6 Performance M5.

Also - next steps from here? There will be a competition pack and a “35 Jarah” which if looking st the F10 would mean adding on best part of 50bhp again

Then the next Gen5 series M5 where could that go? G30 seems to be a massive step on the F10 which itself was a game changer v the E60. 8 years to go

Amazing performance. I would either be dead or in custody within one week of ownership.

I think approx. 200bhp/tonne is the sensible sweet spot for usable performance in the UK these days.

Not really for the M section those sort of thoughts...I'm guessing even the diesels do more than that now! My 'reasonably' powered motorbike has in excess of 600bhp/tonne and is plenty of fun. Commonsense and restraint is required but given we have 20mph speed limits you could lose your licence in pretty much any powered vehicle if you were really determined!

330ds are 170bhp /tonne
C6 RS6’s are 280bhp/tonne
F10 M5 is over 300 bhp per tonne
G30 M5 much more than the old one

The problem with very fast cars is you can only get max power in 2 gears 1st and 2nd the others are well into serious points or ban territory.

Impressive. But more importantly, how does it stop and how does corner?

4 electric motors, plus a 1.5 litre 3 cylinder, turbocharged petrol engine, with even more synthesised engine sounds. 0-60 in 2.6 and 0-100 in 6.2. BMW will claim 86mpg, but in reality it will do 19mpg. wink

I think we will see 5.5 seconds to 100mph and 150 in under 10 seconds

What's this got to do with very fast cars? I've never owned a car that gets to max power in 3rd below 70mph. Probably about 85 is normal. Even my wife's pug 107 would have been over 80.

Any petrol car that does must have absurdly short gears.

Absolutely right , I sold my M5 and M6 GC CP for that reason, they never got worked here, the M3 CP I have now goes in March, for a G30 540i M Sport Xdrive with "M" performance Kit which includes new ECU and Torque converter and Sports Exhaust, that should be fast enough for the UK today IMHO.
