Personally given the research very little goes wrong.
Mine had a few things sorted under warranty by prev owner - a replacement brake caliper as it was sticking, and some Idrive/transmission reflash.
I've got a car related business and am good friends with a BMW indy and from what he said they are very reliable indeed. Obviously I'd stay away from remapped cars and high owner cars just as a precaution.
Also FBMWSH a must if you want to take up a BMW warranty or get any goodwill contributions
ETA - of course make sure the RI service was done and on time!

I have also just jumped into F10 m5 ownership and am very impressed.
Looked at the main competitors, but kept coming back to the m5. The engine is astonishing the way it revs and builds power, and for a modern large car has decent steering feel.
I managed to negotiate 2 years warranty and some servicing as an AUC, so pretty happy with it.
My research tells me they are reliable cars, but the fear of a huge bill made me by AUC (and there isn't a large premium to go this route either at the moment).

I just jumped on the F10 bandwagon also, on a facelift 2014 car. It has a couple of dings to be removed and alloys to be refurbished first so I won't be in it until the end of the month.

I’ve been looking from the 139k mike one for c£20k up to £40k so can see all these in detail - there are not many around. Plus given Autocars video about it being £25k then there is going to be a lot of petrol heads pouring over these (same as myself).
Well in answer to my own question, there really is only one answer...M5. Picking up next week, went AUC with the Dick Lovett's car. Got a great deal and with the mileage I do (5k ish) I doubt I'll lose much even if I trade in a couple of years. Realised I'd test driven the car in all out sport plus which explains alot. Looking forward to getting to know the M properly now. Already have some mods lined up, dechrome, exhaust flaps and reverse cam. They are subtle though, I sent a picture to my friend and he was very concerned I'd gone soft. Fortunately the engine bay says otherwise.

Why do people de Crome a vehicle? It certainly then looks unusual as in modified vs OEM which unless you knew looks like so many other 5 series Cars. Lol exhaust flaps - watch out if you have an early start as it will disturb the neighbours ( what DB are these when modified in that way?)

t like that. Hate any silver bits personally and I think gloss black and Silverstone will look rather tasty and, as it will be my car, that's all that matters! I have an unbaffled motorbike I used for my commute but at least I can wheel it down the road, they'll just have to enjoy the morning rollcall when I take the M!lord trumpton said:

It's interesting that you don't often hear about major DCT issues, certainly nothing like a lot of the SMG gearboxes.All handy to know though when they're worth half of what they are now...

Very robust powertrain engine is unstressed at 560 from a twin turbo 4.4. DCT is strong I've done over 100k with that box with zero issues same with the electronically controlled LSD. More the god-tier levels of bork the S85 and SMG can dish out.
