Just saying hello in here, as anew owner of an X5M
Of course I know to all the purists, that's not an M....!

But I have to say - what a machine it is!
Its a 66 reg car - and I was dumbstruck by the power that it has - its just our family car, but it puts a big silly grin on my face from time to time.

Have owned M3's (many) , M5s and an M6 over the years - and am pleased to say - whether there is need for such a car or not, that the X5M works well for me. I have something more fun in the garage for weekends, but for day to day - what a great bit of kit.

Any other X5M owners around here?

Yep.

Currently 6 months into ownsership on mine.

Bought new in Feb - came from F10 M5 needing more space, yet something that still puts a smile on your face.

Took it to the Nurburgring in Aug, was very surprised at just how good it was round there.

Just fitted some winters as the MPSS aren't great in the cold months and that has improved traction on the colder days..

Also means that should it snow - i'll stand a chance of getting off the driveway.

Enjoy

Cheers

Had mine coming up 2 years from new and 30k miles on the clock..... really don’t like SUV’s but given my wife’s bad back she finds the sitting position so much more comfortable than a ‘normal’ car. If I had to have one, then thought I may as well get the fastest and most car like to drive. Such a relaxing way to pass the day to day grind.

I agree with the need for winters though. This super wide MPSS are a death trap in snow/ice conditions, but it’s a proper weapon with the Pirelli Scorpions on and it rides nicely (and more quietly) with these 20’s rather than summer 21’s.

Been thinking of replacing in the spring, but don’t know what with as new shape probably still 18-24 months away and even bigger and reportedly no lighter? Having sat in an X3 M40 yesterday, the interior seems tat in comparison. So even if X3M drives nice, couldn’t put up with interior downgrade.

Thanks guys - thats very useful. i am actually going to be driving to La Plagne France, for skiing early 2019 - had sort of thought that the X5 should cope - but given the wheel sizes, its no surprise. I had looked at chains etc - but would be very grateful for your input.

Is it best to get some 20" wheels and winter tyres?

If I may ask, how much did that set you back?

Cheers

I kept the 21" alloys and just swapped to Yokohama Bluearth Winters.

The Pirelli option in that size was a runflat - and having had run flats on a previous X5, I was keen to avoid the harshness that they bring.

This is a useful forum for info too as not many UK X5M's about...

I bought the ‘official’ X5M winter wheel/tyre set in 20’s. Not cheap, I think they were c£3,900 but got 10% off from the dealer and just let them store at BMW which is about £85 a year. I think they run a narrower than the 21’s on the back, which is real boon in the snow we had up north last winter, same front and back either 275 or 285; plus they aren’t run flats which is good for the ride. I guess I’ll sell them on when I get rid of the car and recoup some of the cost.

Another X5M owner here, had it around 6 months and 7k miles.

Much the same as above, I needed a family wagon but wanted the M car performance. There isn't anything in the M range that has the same load lugging capability so it really picked itself. It's effortless and I like it that not many people know what it's capable of.

Interested to know what colours others have opted for, I can only assume I'm in the minority with silverstone. I've only ever seen another 2 of these on the road which were in black and grey.

Has anyone managed to squeeze the £3900 winter wheel package down by more than 10%. I have an option of taking one up at £3500 which even with the M premium cost seems through the roof. I can't locate any alternatives to the OEM though ???

even £3500 is a lot of money - am thinking snow chains for the alps, and going with the above yoko winter tyres on my 21's

Agree that very few people realise what they are capable of. Just prefer them to the Cayene and RR. I like the new Maserati Levante, but its lacking performance.

I bought a white one - not my normal colour choice, but actually really pleased with it (when it's clean!)

Likewise I went for white as it was what was in the dealership at the time..

I've also had it remapped by Evolve and its putting out around 700 BHP by all accounts.

Great fun.

Not much more to it really...

Coming from the F10 M5 my initial thoughts on the X5M was that it felt slow (given its size and weight). So I got it mapped. It now pulls much better and the extra power certainly helps hide its weight.

How it compares to a standard X5M now i'm not sure. If your around Hertfordshire we can find out!

Cheers

I have to ask (nosey). How much is a set of MPSS tyres for one of those?

Not bad at all actually, c£1,200 for all 4 (think as they are not run flats) and last an age.... c20k for me.

Not as bad as i was thinking. My uncle was quoted £1800 to replace the continentals on his Q3!

It makes £400 per set of PS4s for my 130i seem cheap though!

I struggled to find snow chains that fitted my x5 due to the tire size. Easier to go with winter tyres

I've always been curious to know what the MPG penalty is on one of these in comparison to an F10 M5. Any insights? Is 25mpg doable on a run?

On a decent run upto Liverpool at the weekend I got 22MPG

Normal round town stuff it shows avg 17MPG

6 laps of the Nurburgring the avg was 7MPG

They are big heavy things compared to M5.

Very helpful, thank you. That's not as bad as I thought - 15%-20% worse by the sound of it on a run (where most of my mileage is).

I found myself behind one recently, for some reason they put the boot down and it fked off at an almighty pace. Quite a surprise given it is the size of a small house!
