It's nearer 6k really though and a convertible, so maybe it was always going to be a bit cheaper?

Who doesn’t love a vert? Get to hear that raspy exhaust note & the induction roar.

If honest (and I don't want to offend any convertible owners) I just don't think a convertible really fits with what the M3 was about. Each to their own though.

E36 M3 too but lower volumes - and yet it’s still lower in £ to buy now than E46 M3’s.

An way too heavy BMW i feel should have stripped out 250 kilo's to make the E36 a much more performance car rather than a shopping dolly car.

Add the fact they also did 4 door versions of the M3, which IMO lost some of the purity of what the E30 M3 had. I think the E46 M3 has aged so much better than the E36 M3's have. Some of the colour combos they did with the E36 M3's was really nasty. The E36 M3 Evo's however, are actually really well done IMO, they had a more focused look, which made them stand out from the normal E36's of the era.

While the E30 M3's are very 80's, I think they have always looked beautiful and you could see the DNA from the race cars. I still think the E30 regardless if it's an M3/Alpina or just a normal 3 series, in coupe form looks just amazing. I am a tad bias as I've owned 4 of them :P

My car was a two owner, full history Dec 03 facelift, manual, sun roof ( which i hated ) Carbon black / black leather ( which i changed to red )
It was on 149,000 miles when i bought it in December 2012 and it was imaculate !! it came on 4 near new Conti M3s. The second owner had comuted from Kent to Hull, 5 days per week, hence the high miles. I paid £5,950 and got a years warranty, which paid for a new starter ( it broke down on Munich legends fore court 30 mins after i collected it, the starter motor had gone ) new front shocks and a rear lower arm bush ( which i got a pal to fit )
I sold it on 179,000 miles in circa June 17. It had a CSL rack ( which is the finest mod one can do to these awesome cars)
The front arches were bad, the rear Conti 3s almost bald, i had recently fitted two new Conti 6s on the front, the rear shocks were knackered ( i had intended to fit Konis all round ) a rear spring was broken and it needed a set of plugs. I maintained it well, never thrashed from cold, top quality oils, it drove superbly and i bet it hasnt lost any power either.
I ran it with no rear seats and the weight difference was Really noticeable.
I also drove it for a week with just the drivers seat and omg, again the difference was amazing! The oe seats are ludicrously heavy, like boat anchors.
I advertised it @ £5,950 on flea bay and had Lots of enquiries. The first guy to contact me ( a really nice guy ) bought it over the phone and paid me £6,000
I reckon i could have got £6,500 for it, but hey ho.
What i Dont miss is putting fuel in it though ??

Wut? In an M3? Every day? Mental! I find that very hard to believe purely from a not enough hours in the day perspective! Hull to Rochester is between 212 and 242 miles each way. I regularly do a 100 mile run to Birmingham in my E46 M3 and with traffic it can take a good 2hrs. Was he sleeping in it too!?

I’ve often done the odd week of 4-500 mile daily round trips & done a full days work at the other end, both in my Z4M & M4. Birmingham is often the first third of the journey for me.

I went E46 hunting in 2017 and for around £12k, all I found were some poorly kept examples from dealers, with bubbles on the wings, front and rear.

I owned an immaculate E46 M3 back in 2008 and loved it. I bought that for £13k at the time, so wasn't about to spend more on a car with higher miles and in need of a lot of bodywork. Really good E46s all seemed to be £16k plus, which I couldn't mentally accept, so opted for an E92 M3 instead, which I'm very happy with. driving

My 2006 Z4MC is on more than 160,000 miles, mainly from doing the Liverpool to London commute for 5 years...although that wasn't a daily trip, just down on Monday, back on Friday. Average trip was 3h30m for 212 miles.

It's retired from 'daily' driving duties now though, and an Alfa 147JTD does the big miles.

Ah yeah, but lots of people do that - the M40 southbound on a Sunday night being the obligatory racetrack for such metal with five crisply ironed shirts hung in the back window being the classic giveaway, perhaps laid flat in your Z4MC! laugh

I just struggle to see anyone doing Hull to Kent every day in an M car over a significant period simply on the basis of the amount of petrol burnt.

Maybe the dude just liked lots of Inspection 2 stamps in the book!

In the early 90s, as a rep selling stationary, i racked up over 30,000 miles per year in my new red ( not my colour choice ) H reg Sierra 1.6LX. The thing was just So slow 🙈

Sorry, meant it to read that I didn't understand why the mileage was relatively low, as it isn't hard to put that many miles on it, and I'd expect a lot more miles if it was being done every day, rather than the once a week I was doing (and still managing 25k miles a year).

M3 Cutters or PH Classifieds are probably best places to search. Or try www.nickjohnsonmotorco.co.uk and check their stock?

So first phase of project starts today.
Full service at local garage where owner is a friend and conviently was previously a BMW MTech technician for the full service.

It will go back to BMW for servicing next year but as we are doing the full monty its going to be far cheaper doing this huge service with someone whom is very experienced with BMWs and happens to be a E46 M3 geek, fan and owner of both car and garage...i know he will treat it differently than main dealer.

Car has a faulty ABS sensor on nearside rear, so thats also being addressed.

Turns out the car has a set of Eibach pro lowering springs fitted (going by ride height and receipt) which will be removed in due course and also 10mm spacers all round which are being removed during service.

Car going in 2nd week Jan for a strip down and full paint bumper to bumper. As mentioned front wings slightly bubbled so purchased new genuine BMW wings.. ( ouch ). Rear arches have very slight start to bubbling where bumper meets arch. Paint looks original and no parking dings, dents or heavy scratches anywhere...very surprised at that.

Also surprised at the Carbon black colour...i thought it would be a very 'black' black...its actually really nice!

Whilst in being painted, we have decided to keep it original and instead of CSL wheels we are going to get the original upgraded 19'' wheels diamond cut.

I have never owned a BMW, for the last 20 years its been AMG mercs but have have to say, you dont get tired of looking at the rear end of a E46 M3...can see why my young lad has went to the dark side..these cars have a huge following for a reason.

When i called about the wings, the local BMW dealer whom supplied it new sent me the data sheet of the original spec...his comment was 'wow...looks like the original owner ticked every box'. It has, it seems, almost every extra that could be fitted at the time.

Glad we are going to bring a slightly tired 89k miles manual E46 M3 back into rude health.

For the price paid, someone could easily of spent very little on it, ran it like this for another 18months then sold it at probably a profit...now that would of been a shame.

Nice MW there, love he carbon black, I had an E39 M5 in that colour..

If you don't mind me asking, where's your friends garage. I've just bought an E46 M3 coupe and will be getting a few bits done, always keen on a recommendation depending on location ?

Good luck with the renovation, I've just bought all new badges and they look great !

Re replacement springs, as long as it isnt dragging itself over speed humps, i would probably keep the Eibachs. The OE springs break regularly.
Also, the OE Sachs shocks are poor, i got just 12,000 miles from a new pair of fronts, they are poorly made. I had planned on fiting Konis.

We are based in the east coast of Scotland Rob...might be a bit off the beaten track for you!

Going through E46 M3 forums, it did seem as though these Eibach springs were a popular default spring to OEM; they seem to be very durable and the price for all 4 of these compared to replacing 2 OEM makes sense.

It is sitting a bit low but its actually an acceptable stance...the young lad wants to keep as is so let him suck it and see...his current Golf has coilovers and lowered so he is used to being shooggled about! The spacers are definately going though...

Mine is sat on Eibach springs and I don't find them too bad either. Certainly compliant enough not to be too tiresome on longer journeys anyway.
