Excuse me if this is one of those topics that has been done to death, I couldn't find what I was looking for in the search.

First when it comes to E39 M5 prices, what is the sweet-spot in terms of mileage vs price? A 40k mile car could be 30-40k GBP. An 80k mile car is 22k GBP. A 120k mile car is 15k GBP. A 150k mile car is 10k.

I feel like well looked after 100k mile+ cars are the ones to go for, for around the 15k mark in terms of value.

Thoughts?

Second, when we are talking about 20k GBP E39 M5s, if an F10 M5 is available for 25k GBP, would you have to be out of your mind to go for the E39? F10 is 15 years younger with fresher components, possibly a BMW warranty, better crash safety, more power, no rust etc etc. If the intended use case for the car is family trips at weekends, as much as I want an E39 M5, the F10 seems like a no brainer.

Would welcome thoughts from anyone who has made the transition, or any other viewpoints are welcome.

This all depends what you're going to do with the car.

A 20k E39 M5 will depreciate less than a 25k F10 M5 if not driven mega miles.

A25k F10 M5 can be covered by a AUC warranty, so will be more reliable (or more cheaply fixed) than an E39 M5.

There are more electronics and complicated mechanical components (DCT Gearbox, Turbos..) on the F10. When these components start to fail (when, not if) the E39 will be cheaper to maintain.

It's not really right to do a direct comparison between the two, although they are both M5's, the usage pattern that would make sense for each would be different.

F10 will never rust, but an E39 sold at auction recently in the US for 150k and although it was delivery mileage I can’t imagane any F10 being worth that in the future.Possibly a 30jhare might get near.
It does say a lot about the desirability of a mint E39

Don't you believe it! The steel bits will rust and the aluminium bits will corrode. In 15 years time they will be just as rusty as the E39's are now, maybe worse.

Probably right - though with the younger years of an F10 you're starting off from a better place regarding preventative maintenance.
I loved both my E39 M5s, but the F10 looks increasingly good value. Given the crossover point in value, the extra usage you could get out of the F10 would probably sway it.

That's what i'm thinking. The extra usability, the headache of not having to garage it each night, and all the extra toys and safety features outweigh (just) the charisma of a nice E39 M5. Probably. Apart from the green one for sale at Nick Cartwright - that's still worth the headache.

If you don't need the practicality of the 5 doors get an M6. I've been looking recently and they seem incredible value for money especially dare I say it on a PCP the GFV is so high on these.

I've been looking this, Oracle will do this for 2k down £348 a month on a 3 year PCP. Extra £500 gets you a second year BMW warranty.

F10's are rusting already, I've seen 2.5 year old ones with evidence of it. Door edges, all four doors.

Interesting tip on oracle finance I've contacted them.

I've had my eye on this car but it's about 3k over priced, unless I'm dreaming?

No worries. Is gone now anyway, but I'm set on a LCI 2014 for sub 30k with 2 year AUC warranty. I've had a 530i f10 for nearly 4 years and its been phenomenal as a family car, m5 can only be leaps and bounds better.

Good lord!! I've been contemplating chopping-in my 440i M Sport Coupe for an M5 or an M6. Those Oracle figures make it all the more tempting. It would cost much the same as keeping my 440 for the next 3 years. Blimey!

I'm off to browse the BMW website! smile

Did you ever go through with this I’ve tried them on one the same age and price this week and they are coming back with 440 pm over 48 months with 2 k in

Prices seem high. I have a nice running 2000 M5 in black/black in in DFW, TEXAS with 180k miles. I'll probably be putting it up on eBay for $8k in the next couple of weeks.

I didn't go for it Dave it's a little too early for me and an Aston Martin V8v has also been calling my name.

Very unlikely considering how many times you see rusty boot lids or wheel arches on E39s....

I don't think the two are really comparable, apart from both being M5s. The e39, imo, should be treated as a classic car - it's legendary, capable and pretty reliable but the upkeep (assuming you care about it) simply due to age (in my experience) is crazy.

The f10 is young enough to use and not worry about - I don't think there is any danger of them becoming classics so no real reason to keep the mileage down.
